Question – Favorite Book One In a Series?

Before I begin, I want to say that this week’s Question wasn’t my idea – it came from a post I read at Welcome to Larissa Bookish Life back in May.  Every Sunday, Larissa hosts the meme Top 5 Sundays.  This particular question that she used keeps creeping back in my head, so I’ve taken that as a sign that someone is telling me to pass her question on to you.  So this week, that is what I am doing.

Getting hooked on a series most usually starts with book one.  Sometimes that book will draw us in enough to make us want to continue on with the series, later finding our favorite book of said series.  And sometimes that first book will end up being out favorite.

There are a few book ones that I have extra love for.  I still love the entire series to date, but there is just something about the first book that gives me goosebumps when I think about it.

When I commented on Larissa’s post back in May, these were my answers:

Half Way to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost – I love a good ‘boy meets girl’ story, and of course the infamous pairing of Cat & Bones begins in this book.  I love this couple and love this series, but there is just something about this book one, where they first meet and fall in love, that keeps me swooning.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – Again, meeting Valek for the first time, you know there is something extra special about this guy.  Also Yelena and how she is just starting to grow into the powerful woman she eventually becomes, it is lovely to witness from its very beginning.

Angel’s Blood by Nalini Singh – (I’m seeing a pattern here…)  Elena and Raphael are a power coupling.  Observing their beginning, how Elena actually feared Raphael and how she, in turn, threw him for a bit of a loop…love it.  Love everything about it.

Vision in White by Nora Roberts – I love Carter and how he is with Mac.  Carter is on my favorite characters list for a reason.  He’s a sweet and cute and sexy geek – a wonderful combination.

Those were the books I mentioned in my comment.  After commenting originally, I realized that I should have added this one too:

Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding – The whole concept of this book is amazing!  I love this series but I adore this book.  Such a raw and gritty UF book and unlike anything I’ve ever read.

So how about you?  What would some of your favorite book ones in a series be?

  1. This is so easy for me. RAPHAEL by D.B.Reynolds (Bk. #1 in the Vampires In America Series). This is how vampire fiction should be written.

  2. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison.
This was my first “Urban Fantasy” read.
The introduction to the Hollows & the world of Rachel, Jenks, and Ivy.

    A Witch, a Pixy, & a Vampire walk into a bar . . .

  3. I agree with Dot S. Raphael is awesome. Dark Lover by J.R. Ward is another great one.

  4. I really liked Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh too.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is another first time love that holds great memories because that is when Jamie and Claire meet and marry.

I agree about Cat and Bones. I love to follow a couple through all their books and there isn’t many book series at there where it is couple driven book after book. Those are my favourite series. I am firm believer that just because the protagonists get married, it doesnt mean the rest of the series is now over. I wish there were more book series out there like that.

  5. Dark Lover
I just finishing As Lie the Dead, I have to say Three days to Dead was pretty impressive.
I’m surprise Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione is not on list.

  6. Oh! my God how could I forget?!
    THE OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon

  7. I love Larissa’s Sunday Meme’s. The first one that comes to mind is Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch..then Dead, Undead and Somewhere In Between by J.A. Saare

  8. Dot – Wow Dot. Now you’ve made me add another book to my wish list. 😉

Roger Simmons – I’ve yet to read that series, but I have wanted to for quite some time now. Glad to see you think it’s starts off well. 🙂

Paranormal Haven – I love Dark Lover, but it’s not my fave in the series. A great start to the BDB series though. And I’m glad you liked Raphael too. Now I know it belongs on my wish list (as opposed to my to-check-out list which is where it was before)

Michelle – I agree with you. I think it takes a talented author to keep the chemistry strong on the page once a couple is married, but it’s totally doable. 🙂

Lupdilup – Sin Undone is my favorite in the Demonica Series. Loved Sin and Con and the whole story. 🙂

Colette – I enjoyed Touched by an Alien too. It is the only book in that series that I read, but it has that ‘boy meets girl’ aspect that I so love. 🙂

  9. Most of my favorite books from a series are not the first book. I might have loved the first book but later on down the road another book grabs my attention and I can’t help but love it more. I’m just going to list a couple series that I loved because the first book grabbed my attention and drew me in:

The Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris
The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost
The Lords of the Underworld Series by Gena Showalter

I know we’ve talked about favorite books in a series before and I pointed out that in most series book 4 has been my favorite. I don’t quite know why but that is the case in almost all of them so far…except Sookie Stackhouse which book 7 was my absolute favorite. LOL.

  10. I just read HOUNDED and forgot to put that in my earlier post. I just reviewed it today, loved it!!!!!!

(Julie, you MUST read RAPHAEL!! I’m dying to know what you think of it.)

  11. I am with you on Poison Study, I loved that book, but I hated the rest. I regret buying them so yes that makes them bad

  12. Fallen by Lauren Kate

I know there are others, but this is the first to come to mind.

  13. Demon’s Lexicon is by far the best of the trilogy. I liked book two, but the first one stands out in my memory as the best of the three.

  14. One of my fave firsts in a series is Ill Wind by Rachel Caine. It’s part of her Weather Warden series. That book totally sucked me in.

  15. NIghtlife by Rob Thurman and A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix would be at the top of my list. But there are so many others (other than what others have mentioned)…Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk, Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill and Night Shift by Lilith Saintcrow.

  16. So many books that it’s impossible for me to name them, but I guess the first books of my favorite series or I don’t know…. ahhh! Very difficult question.

  17. Very interesting question Julie, one I have pondered for some time. I still don’t know if I love the 1st book ina series because it was my introduction to such an amazing series or because it really is one of (if not) the best novel in the series. In the whole Women of the Otherworld series Bitten is my favourite as is Born in Fire by Nora Roberts in her Born In trilogy. But there are some series where I prefer a later book: like the Vampire Academy series, Anne of Green Gables series, etc.

But yes, mostly somehow 1st books remain my favourites 😀
    But usually

  18. In terms of this genre then Hounded by Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles) is probably top of the list for the best first book in a series.

A lot of the others I now love grew on me as their series progressed. Often the second or third are my favourite

  19. Deanna – The first Twilight book is for sure my fave of that series. No contest really. 🙂

Dot – I’ll put Raphael on my list for next year!

blodeuedd – The other books were alright. I still really enjoyed them, but Poison Study really was amazing!

Heather – I am not aware of that one. I’ll have to check it out! 🙂

Ruby – I’ve heard that that is an incredible book!

Jen – I actually picked that one up recently. Have no idea when I’ll read it, but it’s in my book closet waiting for me. 🙂

Karen – I was debating putting Magic to the Bone on my list, but I didn’t rate it as high as Magic on the Hunt. But I LOVED how Devon went from Allie’s to the “boy’s” point of view. Really cool.

    BookaholicCat – lol You’re cute. 😉

Stella – Anne of Green Gables is an interesting one. I would agree with you on that one. And I have yet to read Bitten. I really have to…

    Shelleyrae – I loved Hounded!

  20. No doubt Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. Also, the first book (actually 2 in one) in Shelly Laurenston’s Pride series, the Mane Event.

  21. ooooo really great post and idea!
I would have to say Angel’s Blood by Nalini Singh, Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh, When Darkness Comes by Alexandra Ivy, Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch, Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning, Dance Upon the Air by Nora Roberts and that’s all I can think of off the top of my head!
