Kick Ass Chick – Mercedes Thompson

From Goodreads

“Mechanic Mercy Thompson has friends in low places-and in dark ones. And now she owes one of them a favor. Since she can shapeshift at will, she agrees to act as some extra muscle when her vampire friend Stefan goes to deliver a message to another of his kind.

But this new vampire is hardly ordinary-and neither is the demon inside of him.”

Mercedes Thompson is back a second time around in Patricia Briggs’ “Blood Bound”.  Of course as with the first, you get lots of werewolves and coyote in this one but you also get a delightful glimpse at the vampires that exist in Mercy’s world. *shiver* Let me just tell you that once you finish reading this one, you will very much appreciate Stephan and his creepy quirks — they make him look like a charming prince when compared to the other vampires.

Mercy really gets to flex her muscles in this one.  She’s faced with a true evil – a demon possessed vampire – and she seems to be the only one who can really save the day.  It sounds a little hokey, but Patricia Briggs’ writing talent ensures that it doesn’t come across that way.  Mercy is no super hero.  She still maintains her sense of right and wrong, even when dealing with enemies that have hurt and battered those she’s close to.  And when she confronts this evil, it’s not just one super kick and she’s done.  There is a real struggle, both physical and psychological.  I love that about Mercy.  I know she’s just a character in a fictional world, but her sense of ethics just makes her seem so real.  She is an absolute joy to read.  I don’t think there is a single character in this series so far that just gets on my nerves.  You know what I mean — there is usually one guy who makes you wonder why the hell he’s even in the story.  There is none of that here.  You feel Samuel’s struggle, you wonder about Stephan’s loyalties, you scratch your head over Ben and you giggle with Jesse.  And of course, you swoon over Adam and you wonder why Mercy is torn.  Yeah, yeah…there is history between her and Samuel.  He was her first love and blah, blah, blah…  But c’mon!?  You wonder over Adam!?  I’m sorry Mercy, but for me it’s a no brainer!

I’m hooked on this series – I just can’t seem to put is down even though the book club I’m a part of is reading something different.  lol  I’ll get to that one eventually.  Right now, I’m just wanting to follow Mercy and Adam and Samuel and Jesse and Gabriel and Zee and Stephan and so on until there are no more ‘Mercedes Thompson’ books left to read.  I can’t wait to start “Iron Kissed”, the 3rd book in the ‘Mercedes Thompson’ series.  If the first two installments are any indication, it should be a fantastic ride!

5 stars

Swoon worthy quotes

“Even to my monocular gaze, he was beautiful, more beautiful than I remembered him being.  I wanted to linger on his slavic cheekbones and his sensuous mouth, damn it.”

“’You don’t have a heart,’ I told him.  ‘Just a gaping hole where it should have been.’

‘All the more reason for you to give me yours.’”

  1. It is a no brainer Mercy!! I heart Adam! 😉

  2. Mandi, I really do like Adam’s character. He’s yummy!

  3. I really have to give this series a try!

  4. Yes Buckeye Girl, yes you do. It’s really, really good!

  5. You are just lucky that you have five books available already. Plus, once you are finished with those, you can start on Briggs’ Alpha & Omega series, which is set in the same world as Mercy, but features Samuel’s brother Charles and his mate Anna. I think it is just as good as the Mercy series.

  6. Jen, I’ve been wondering about her Alpha & Omega series. I’ll have to check it out!

  7. I really like series that feature committed couples and there aren’t very many of them. Alpha & Omega is a good urban fantasy, but it’s also a very strong relationship series. I reread this one even more than I reread Mercy because I just love the dynamics between these two characters.

If you do read it, you HAVE to start with the short story where the two of them meet. It’s in the anthology called On The Prowl. You used to be able to just buy the Briggs story in ebook format instead of having to buy the whole anthology but I just checked Amazon and that option is no longer available. Probably Penguin yanked it when they had their fight with Amazon.
