AAD Author Spotlight: Interview with Adrian Phoenix plus giveaways

My fourteenth Authors After Dark Spotlight is none other than the fabulous Adrian Phoenix!  *waves arms like Kermit the frog*

Questions about AAD:
Have you attended Authors After Dark before or are you an AAD virgin like me?

I’m an AAD virgin like you. <g> This is my first time at AAD, but not my first time in New Orleans. Love N’awlins! I was last there for Halloween in 2010 (and they celebrate Halloween for DAYS). It’ll be good to be back, but I’m not looking forward to the August heat and humidity. Yay for air conditioning!

What are you most looking forward to at AAD2012?

Meeting people, chatting with other authors, and hanging out. Oh, and endless daiquiris.

Which author(s) attending AAD2012 are you most looking forward to meeting?

First, I’m looking forward to meeting Kelly Gay, who I’ve chatted with in emails and on Twitter, and whose books I’ve really enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to catching up with authors that I’ve met at other conventions like Jeaniene Frost, Jaye Wells, Mark Henry, Diana Rowland, and Allison Pang. All are great writers and I get to play fangirl. LOL.

Questions about your WRITING and READING HABITS:
What did you do when you found out you were being published for the first time?

I jumped up and down and squealed. I think that’s standard. LOL. I had to keep the jumping to a minimum though because I’d been in a car accident just two days before and was still pretty damned sore. Then I went to work. Reluctantly.

Of all of the books you’ve written, which is your favorite?

That’s a tough one! I honestly love them all. I guess if you put a gun to my head, my favorite would be my first, A Rush of Wings. I had no expectations when I wrote that—no editor, no readers, I wrote it purely for myself and without fear.

Have you ever written a scene that made you blush?

<blushes> More than once. Sheesh. I think they all make me blush a little. And that’s a good thing! It means you’re feeling it. A certain scene in Black Dust Mambo with Basil Augustine after he possessed Layne and explored the nomad’s sexy body certainly qualifies. Ditto with the marathon sex scene in Black Heart Loa. In The Maker’s Song series, the sex scenes qualify too, but they’re shorter and less frequent because everybody is so busy trying not to die. LOL.

Who was your favorite hero or heroine to write?

Favorite hero to write is Dante without doubt. (Von a close second, followed by Lucien, Layne.) Favorite heroine would have to be Heather. Though Kallie and her BFF Belladonna are a blast to write too.

Who is your favorite hero or heroine to read?

Favorite hero to read is Cal Leandros (and his brother Niko) in Rob Thurman’s Cal Leandros series. Absolutely love those books and anything Rob writes. Favorite heroine would be Gin Blanco from Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series, but Cat Crawfield from Jeaniene Frost’s Night huntress is another, as is Anna Strong from Jeanne C. Stein’s Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles, and Boss from Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Diving the Wreck books.

Have you ever been surprised by a reader’s reaction to a scene that you wrote – either good or bad?

Sheesh. All the time. Fortunately, the good outweigh the bad. I’m tempted to cite examples, but I won’t in case those readers happen to be reading this too. Love ya all! <blows kisses>

Have you always been a reader or are you like me and got turned off by the mind-numbingly boring deep and multi-layered books you had to read in High School only to ‘find’ reading again as an adult?

I was a reader from the moment I learned how to read. I read constantly. Yup, I believe I was one of those kids nicknamed “bookworm.” You know, said with a disdainful eyeroll. LOL. But I’m so glad you found reading again as an adult. It doesn’t matter when it hits you, as long as it does!

What book do you most remember having read in High School?

High school. Hmmm. I spent most of my time high. (Well, sophomore year, anyway. LOL.) I’m sure I was still reading, but I don’t remember what. Since nothing pops up, I’ll go with my junior high literary love, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (loved all of her books, actually). I also loved most books by Paul Zindel—The Pigman; My Darling, My Hamburger (great stories, weird titles).

Questions about YOU:
What is your favorite movie?

Oh, man! A really tough question! I’ll go with Gladiator with The Last Samurai as a close second. I also loved Interview with the Vampire. The Underworld movies are a lot of fun too. (Though I still haven’t seen the latest.) I love heroic flicks full of sacrifice, betrayal, and brotherhood.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Chocolate, but Dairy Queen vanilla softies rule.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I used to be a night owl, but over time that’s changed. I don’t think I’ll ever be a morning person, per se, but maybe a late morning person.

Tell us something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I played live action D&D once in an abandoned missile silo and learned the hard way never to follow someone who is shorter than you in the dark. One concussion later . . .

Question about your UPCOMING RELEASE(S):
You are one busy lady!  On Midnight Wings, the fifth book in your Maker’s Song series, is due to come out in 2013.  Can you give us a hint as to what Heather and company will be facing in this next installment?

First, my apologies to everyone who expected this book sooner. The delay is purely my fault and no one else’s. Prior health problems slowed me way down, but all is good now! Now, as for Dante and Heather in On Midnight Wings, here’s a bit from the back cover:

As Dante Baptiste’s true identity as both True Blood and Fallen ripples throughout New Orleans, he and Heather struggle for their lives against different foes, fighting their way back to each other. To free herself from her father’s treachery, Heather accepts help from an ally–and steps into even greater danger. Dante, lost to his brutal past, wavers between his own sense of self and the Bad Seed-programmed S that lurks within, between the never-ending Road and the Great Destroyer. And the danger of becoming both.

Lucien searches frantically for the lovers, all too aware that time is running out. Dark forces continue to gather, eager to possess and manipulate the young vampire for their own ends. The fate of mortals, nightkind, and the Fallen pivots around Dante as he struggles to piece together his shattered psyche and gain control of his power before he rips all three worlds asunder.

You not only have one successful series on the go, you have two!  You also pen the Hoodoo series.  Tell us about it.

This series takes place in the Louisiana bayou and features Kallie Rivière, her hilarious BFF, Belladonna Brown, sexy nomad Layne Valin, magic, dark spirits and loa, loups-garous, mystery , and murder. Kallie is a young woman who has survived an inexplicable explosion of violence as a teenager that claimed her family, and has been learning hoodoo from her Aunt Gabrielle since coming to Bayou Cyprés Noir to live with her. Kallie is haunted by that one tragic event, and is determined to put it behind her. She took up boxing as a way to work off her pent-up anger and grief, her doubts.

Hoodoo runs in the family, so Kallie took it naturally and without question. Kallie is fiery, strong, compassionate, loyal to her friends and family, a healthy and hot-blooded gal, and a little too quick to throw a punch. She’s not known for saying please or thank you or for being very patient. She’s very close to her cousin, Jackson, who also lives with her and their aunt.

Black Dust Mambo starts off the series with Kallie and Belladonna in New Orleans to attend a carnival/convention for magic practitioners and everything goes to hell in a hand basket when Kallie wakes up in a blood-soaked bed beside the body of her lover (a nomad she’d just met. Hey, what happens at carnival, stays in carnival!)

Here’s a bit from the back cover:

“There will be times, girl, when all your magic ain’t going to be enough, times when it will seem to dry up like mud under the noonday sun, or even make matters worse . . .”

Kallie Riviere, a fiery Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a talent for trouble, finds herself smack-dab in the middle of one of those times her mentor warned her about when she visits New Orleans to attend the Hecatean Alliance’s annual carnival: her hard-bodied conjurer hookup ends up dead in her blood-drenched bed. And he was killed by something that Kallie would never dream of touching — the darkest of dark juju, soul-eating juju — a black dust hex that may have been meant to kill her.

Now Kallie has to use every bit of hoodoo knowledge and bayou-bred mojo she possesses to clear her own name and find the killer even as that dark sorcerer hunts Kallie and her friends. But Kallie’s search for the truth soon leads her in a direction she never anticipated — back home to Bayou Cyprés Noir, and to Gabrielle LaRue, Kallie’s aunt, protector, and hoodoo mentor . . . who is looking more and more like she just might be the one who wants Kallie dead.

Black Heart Loa picks up where Black Dust Mambo leaves off, but adds a killer hurricane and werewolves.

Not only do you have two successful series on the go, but you are working on a third!  Your latest project is your Sons of Darkness series.  What can readers expect from that series and when should we see it on the shelf?

Sons of Darkness features the Taliesin brothers, Shayne and Sam (yes, Shaine who often watched Supernatural and wished for a little brother to boss around, named him after Sam Winchester when his wish finally and unexpectedly came true). Sam is often called Shayne’s Shadow. These brothers aren’t completely human and they fight the forces of evil—a heritage that is their own—with a clan of outlaws, mystics, and nomads devoted to that cause. But deadly secrets, betrayal, and conspiracy pave Shayne and Sam’s path. It’s like Sons of Anarchy meets Call of Cthulhu with a side of Supernatural. LOL.

Readers shouldn’t expect to see it until 2013—which is going to be one helluva good year!

I am a huge Supernatural fan and what female doesn’t love SoA? Between all that eye candy on those two shows I am surprised I am not attached to a dvd player. I look forward to Sons of Darkness when it comes out and reading more about Shayne and Sam

S.E Hinton was author that has stuck with me over the ages, I haven’t read it any of her books since High School but they are forever seared on my soul as classics.

Wow, another couple series I need to read. I would be happy with anything. I guess I’ll say Black Dust Mambo as I’m a fan of books with “magic” which it sounds like this is a kind of magic. Thanks so much for doing the fun giveaways. 🙂

  22. Na S., Greetings, fellow bookworm! The world in the third series will be the same as in the other books, but will reveal different facets of that world, just like the Maker’s Song focuses on New Orleans, vampires, and fallen angels, and the Hoodoo books focus on magic, loa, werewolves, and the bayous, Sons of Darkness will show another layer. 🙂

SinN, Great to see you, as always! Hugs for the support!

Carolline, Thanks for joining us. I’m looking forward to your stalking . . . I mean questions at AAD. 😉 I hear you about SoA and SPN. Love those shows (and the men on them). 23. connery says:

so cannot wait until the next books come out, hon…not to mention the new series you’ve got in the works…and you’ll have to have a hurricane on me in the Big Easy *winks*

  24. Wow 2013 really is going to be one helluva good year!! Shayne and Sam’s story cannot come soon enough. I would say that there is no way I can love the Sons of Darkness series as much as the Maker’s Song and Hoodoo books, but I have no doubt Adrian will make SoD just as amazing as the others. I honestly don’t know how she does it but I’m soooo very glad she does!!!

I can’t wait to go on Adrian’s fieldtrip at AAD NOLA. When I got my ticket it was like a kid on Christmas morning. I took a double-take at my confirmation email thinking NO WAY am I this lucky!! This will be my 1st AAD trip as well as my 1st visit to New Orleans so I have no idea what to expect but fully believe it will be unforgettable.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview and giveaway!! It is really exciting to read about authors and what makes them “tick” so to speak. I’m taking my daughter to the RT convention in Chicago next weekend. We are both so excited it is ridiculous. I’m glad we can share our love of books and be in such awe of their authors. 😉

I would love to win Etched in Bone. Thanks again!!

  34. Reading an Adrian Phoenix book is as much of an adrenaline rush as drinking three cans of Monster/Relentless…I agree with Annette Von is a very fine specimen of maleness, and usually I don’t like men with facial hair, must just be Von. *fans self*

    Now I’m having naughty thoughts…

Any fan of Urban Fantasy should read Adrian Phoenix or to be honest deserves to have their reading rights taken away…
