AAD Author Spotlight: Interview with Jae Lynne Davies plus giveaway

My nineteenth Authors After Dark Spotlight is with Jae Lynne Davies!

Questions about AAD:
Have you attended Authors After Dark before or are you an AAD virgin like me?

I’ve attended the past two Authors After Dark cons and had a blast at both. I can honestly say they improve with each passing year! You’ll have a blast!

What are you most looking forward to at AAD2012?

First, the convention is being held in New Orleans which means I’m looking forward to chicory coffee each morning! (LOL)

Coffee aside, I’m looking forward to connecting with readers, catching up with old friends, and rubbing elbows with other authors with the hope of gaining a few tips that could improve my craft. Because of the unique atmosphere AAD offers, I’ll likely be doing all three at once!

Which author(s) attending AAD2012 are you most looking forward to meeting?

I can’t wait to see Joey W. Hill! Joey’s work is simply awe-inspiring and I look forward to chatting with her about our love of books and maybe pick up a few tricks of the trade. Meeting other authors I’m not yet familiar with is an added bonus.

Questions about your WRITING and READING HABITS:
What did you do when you found out you were being published for the first time?

I’ll never forget the moment when I found out I was to be published. I remember being involved in the day-to-day activities of my day job when I received the email with the contract offer. After staring wide-eyed at the screen a few moments, I shared the news at volumes that could break the sound barrier. Later that week, my husband took me to a lovely dinner to celebrate.

Of all of the books you’ve written, which is your favorite?

I tend to think that whatever I might be writing at the moment is my favorite book, but I can’t ignore the fact that Mythic has a special place in my heart. The story played on a constant loop in my mind until I wrote everything down and I thoroughly enjoy losing myself in the fictional world I’ve created whenever I feel the need to escape.

Have you ever written a scene that made you blush?

I don’t think I’ve written a scene that made me blush, but I have written a few that caused me to overheat.  Intimate scenes ranging from the sensual to the erotic are crucial elements of the story. Those moments show the characters at their most vulnerable where they convey their deepest passion and the true depth of a character is often revealed. As authors, we’re catalysts for our characters, so when I write a couple who takes their intimacy to an erotic level, I do my best not to discourage. I wouldn’t want them to stop talking to me all together. (LOL)

Who was your favorite hero or heroine to write?

I always enjoy seeing the world through Gianna Marino’s eyes (the heroine in my Mythic series). As a human/vampire hybrid she’s a wonderfully complex character who continues to grow with each story. And she has a few men fighting for the opportunity to claim her for himself, which doesn’t sound too bad.

The same could be said about my villain in the MYTHIC series, Mattias Vitale. The vampire coven leader has so many layers, he could be compared to an onion. With each layer, there’s something new to learn. Mattias keeps me on my toes because once I have him figured out, he surprises me.

Who is your favorite hero or heroine to read?

This is a tough one, but I think Acheron from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter novels tops the list.

Have you ever been surprised by a reader’s reaction to a scene that you wrote – either good or bad?

Yes, quite recently, actually. A reader contact me stating she enjoyed Mythic and proceeded to tell me I left her in tears at one point. To evoke that sort of reaction from a reader is one of the highest compliments I can receive.

Have you always been a reader or are you like me and got turned off by the mind-numbingly boring deep and multi-layered books you had to read in High School only to ‘find’ reading again as an adult?

While I enjoyed reading as a child, I wasn’t one of those students that appreciated the mandatory reading assignments during my High School years. Unfortunately, reading for pure enjoyment suffered during that time until a friend recommended a novel that rekindled my love of reading and I haven’t looked back.

What book do you most remember having read in High School?

The most memorable (and the most enjoyable) book I read during High School was “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. I enjoyed the book so much, the story remained with me ever since and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the novel is still a reading assignment for High School students.

Questions about YOU:
What is your favorite movie?

I have several that include The Outsiders, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Interview with a Vampire, and The Lost Boys.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Mint Chocolate Cookie (Ben & Jerry)

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I’ve always been a night owl. You’ll find me raring to go at 3am but don’t try to wake me in the morning.

Tell us something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t know that I’d necessarily consider it surprising, but after speaking with people about this, they’re often impressed with the details. I dream very vividly. So vividly, in fact, I remember points where the dream takes an entirely new direction in a series of flashes. I used to keep a journal of dreams when I was younger and I often use them for story ideas.

Question about your UPCOMING RELEASE(S):
Blood Moon, book two in your Mythic series, is slated for a summer 2012 release!  Tell us about the series and about your upcoming installment.

Keep your fingers crossed as I’m turning the manuscript into my editor THIS WEEK! I’m hoping for the summer 2012 release provided she’s happy with the story.

The Mythic series revolves around the heroine, human/vampire hybrid, Gianna Marino and her quest for vengeance and journey to self discovery. Because of her genetic makeup, she’s unique in both worlds, but has no place in either. She spent most of her two hundred years of existence hunting the vampire responsible for the murder of her family and when she finds him leading London’s vampire coven, she infiltrates the association posing as a human with a desire to be turned and catches the vampire’s eye. As their relationship develops, a handsome stranger enters the picture with an agenda of his own is lured into their seductive game, resulting in a heated love triangle. But when she discovers a secret that blurs the lines between good and evil, forever changing the course of her existence, Gianna must make the ultimate decision. On which side will she stand?

In the second installment, titled Blood Moon, Gianna is in for a bit more than she bargained for. When word is received of suspicious vampire activity, Gianna Marino is assigned to an investigation that leads her to Greece, where she discovers vampire Dante Diakos—the recently resigned second in command of London’s vampire coven, and a dangerous prophecy.

For Dante is the last of a pure immortal bloodline—a descendant of the gods, and he intends to invoke the power of the entire pantheon on the eve of the Blood Moon which occurs once every millennia. If he attains the legendary abilities, he’ll be the most powerful being on earth and intends for her to rule by his side.

When the fate of world hangs in the balance, the decision is placed in Gianna’s hands…become an eternal slave to Dante’s will or lose everyone she’s ever loved.

The Contract is a short story that you wrote for volume 5 of Tease Publishing’s ongoing anthology Love’s Immortal Pantheon.  You’re hoping to expand on this story by perhaps giving some of the characters that you introduced in The Contract their own book!  Can you tell us more about that?  Sounds very exciting!

The Contract was a wonderful writing experience that I plan to revisit again soon. Diana and Cole were amazing characters and we’ll see them once again in The Ritual, which will depict Cole’s transformation from man to immortal. Be sure to visit my website for updates regarding story progress and publication status.

I’ve received such positive feedback for The Contract and even earned a nomination for Fantasy Short Story of the Year in the Authors After Dark Bookie Awards, but the one comment that everyone seems to make is how the story was too short for their liking. I’ll keep the comment in mind and figure I’d let it simmer awhile. Though I have no immediate plans for a full-length novel featuring Diana and Cole, I’m certainly not opposed to idea.
