Interview with Amanda Carlson plus giveaway

The lady who I have visiting today is a debut author who wrote one of the most anticipated books of the year.  If you like Urban Fantasy books, her book is for you.  If you like books about werewolves, her book is for you.  If you like books with wonderfully snarky heroines, her book is for you.  And if you like a variety of yummy men, her book is for you.  And just who is this lady?  It’s Amanda Carlson of course!

Welcome back to Yummy Men & Kick Ass Chicks Amanda!

Thanks for having me back! So happy to be here.

The first book in your Jessica McClain series, Full Blooded, is coming out in 6 more sleeps and has already received some fantastic reviews!  (So far on Goodreads, there are 68 ratings and the average is 4.47 stars!) Tell us about your series and about its first installment.

FULL BLOODED starts with my heroine tossed into a life-changing moment and runs from there.  It was fun to write a heroine who is discovering what she is as at the same time the readers do. She’s snarky and fun, and doesn’t take life too seriously. It’s meant to be a fast-paced action adventure.

Jessica is the only female werewolf…ever.  The other werewolves are a little apprehensive about her existence because her being born seems to coincide with a prophecy that was made forever ago.  Can you explain the prophecy and the role it is and will be playing in the series?

The Cain Myth was a tangible way to focus fear on Jessica, from her childhood throughout her life. My wolves are superstitious in the extreme and having a female born into the Pack is a serious problem. The Cain Myth plays into that fear perfectly. Now, I can’t give anything away, but things aren’t always as they seem. Is Jessica the doom for them all?  You’ll have to stay tuned!

Full Blooded starts off with a huge and important scene:  Jessica’s first change into a wolf…10 years later than it ‘should’ have happened!  Basically, Jessica assumed she would never Change and that she would remain ‘just human’ her whole life but fate had other plans and bam! while she is sleeping, she begins to Change.  Talk about the worst way of waking up ever!  Did you always know that that would be your series’ opening scene?

Yes, this scene is what started it all. I believe I was lying in bed one night and I had this very graphic scene play out in my head. It was of a female shifting into a wolf for the first time. She was scared, I knew she was the only female, I had her name and that was it. After the scene, including all the craziness that followed, I had to sit down and write the story and see where it led me. FULL BLOODED was the outcome.

You have surrounded Jessica with some pretty impressive men.  James, Tyler, Danny, Rourke…really, you done good.  Now, we romance reading urban fantasy fans are picky about our literary men.  You were able to write four strong, smart, sexy characters that we women are very drawn to.  How did you manage that?

That’s a good question! LOL. I wrote the guys how I would want them in my own life. Strong dad, loyal brother, snarky pal, serious friend. They all play a huge role in Jessica’s life and I love them all. The fact that it works in the novel for you is wonderful to me, because they are each special and very much their own to me.

Novella’s are becoming more and more popular with authors (as you know since you technically started the series with Blooded).  Authors and readers alike like the idea because you can write a nice story for favorite supporting characters without getting in the way of the main story arc.  I know I would like to see a story with Danny and a story with Tyler… any plans for novellas featuring those two?  Any plans for more novellas at all?

I’d love to write more novellas, but more importantly, some day I’d love to write their full stories. Will it happen? I hope so!

I love that you wrote your werewolves as having a separate Wolf living inside their minds, trying to control them.  Did you always have that in mind when you conjured up your weres or did that idea come to you in your sleep just out of the blue?

It happened organically as I was writing Jessica. It seemed natural for her to communicate with this new personality of hers. As the story went, they became more seamless and fun to write. I kept thinking, what if this was happening to me? I just wanted it to be the most natural transition it could be.

Your vampires…damn they are creepy!  And I say this as a person who has read a lot of vampire books!  Why did you decide to make them so…*shudder* creepy?

Not everyone can be cute and cuddly! Honestly, I wanted a different take on vamps and I wanted them to complement the wolves in the direct opposite way. Where we loved Jess and her family, we disliked the vamps. But, are they all awful? You’ll have to wait and see… (insert evil cackle).

The second book in your series, Hot Blooded, is due to release on April 23rd 2013.  Tell us what we can expect from that book.

Jessica is on the journey of her life in HOT BLOODED. She’s out to free her man, kill her nemesis and figure out who and what she is. It was such a fun book to write because of all the ups and downs she faces. She also has her share of supernatural obstacles to get through.  That was the most fun to write!

Okay, Flash Four time
Flash Four questions about books and writing ~

How long, from start to end, did it take you to write “Full Blooded”?

Two years

Did you see yourself being a writer as you were growing up?

Yes, but only for fun. I never wanted to go into journalism. I’ve always called myself a “creative” writer.

In what room of your house do you write from?

Sunroom attached to my bedroom.

Do you tend to come up with the title for your book before you start writing it, while you’re writing it or when it’s all done?

I came up with FULL BLOODED fairly soon into the novel. For the series HOT BLOODED and COLD BLOODED were obvious choices. I was mildly surprised my publisher went with them. They don’t always, but I really feel like they fit the series so perfectly.  I’m very happy.
