Did he do the right thing?
No one loves Darian like Tyler does. Not her friends. Not her fellow Shaedes. Not the Shaede king who wants her for himself. Tyler is the only one who sees beyond the swagger and swordplay that make her the most fearsome Shaede assassin in the world—the only one who recognizes her loyal heart and vulnerability. But her evolving powers and compulsion to finish every job no matter the stakes fills him with fear. For he knows it’s only a matter of time before he loses her.
When that moment nearly comes—and Tyler discovers a trail of deceit that prevented him from protecting Darian—he snaps. He breaks. And he leaves.
Now he must learn to live without her, even as they remain bound to one another. And when a friend of Darian’s faces an unknown threat, Tyler must find a way to enter the fray without crossing paths with Darian.
Lost to the Gray is a short story that takes place right after the second book in Amanda Bonilla’s Shaede Assassin series. But don’t let the word ‘short’ worry you – this story packs quite the punch.
Before I go on I want to tell you that if you are new to the series I would not recommend jumping in with this story. Not only are there some significant spoilers from happenings at the end of the second book but there isn’t much explanation of the world and you would most likely feel a bit lost. So you guys, start with Shaedes of Gray. For you who have already read the first and second book and are very close to wanting to smack Tyler (even though you love him and mostly understand why he did what he did), this is a must read. A. Must. Read.
**This is where I talk spoilers about book two so if you are not up to date, skip to the last paragraph of this review**
Lost to the Gray does three things. It shows us how Ty is dealing with his ‘break’ with Darian, it shows us just what an awesome friend Ty is and it tells the story of how Ty and Darian met and bonded.
I’ll explain all three.
Ty is a very emotional and dramatic person. ‘Drama prince’ would describe him well. His emotions are all over the place on a good day so you can imagine how he is doing now that he and Darian are on a break. He is wondering if he made the right decision and wondering how Darian is dealing. He’s wondering if she has run to Xander’s arms. These parts of the book are pretty heavy emotionally. Ty is not afraid to show how he is feeling and we are right alongside him as he goes from down to ‘okay-with-it’ to depressed. I didn’t find Amanda went too far though. There were times when I was thinking “okay buddy, one more minute and I’m going to start thinking you’re a chick” but right at that moment, Amanda reels it in and snaps Ty out of it for a bit. It was nice to see exactly how Ty was doing but keep in mind that he is not in a good place.
He snaps out of it long enough to help out a friend who is in some pretty deep doggy doodoo. Levi, a bartender at the bar that Ty and Darian frequent and knower of all things supernatural (even though he is human), is in deep trouble. I’m talking scary life threatening trouble. Ty offers to help him out but to do that he has to put himself in danger. This part of the book is creepy and scary and awesome. The final scenes are just amazing. I was holding my breath for most of one chapter. Spooky villain, original idea, gambling, make-out scenes, suspense…it has everything.
I think my favorite part of this book was seeing how Ty met Darian and how he bonded with her. What makes these parts even more special is that this book is told in first person point of view from Ty’s perspective. So we are right there, in his head, as he’s thinking back on some of the most important times in his life. Amanda did a great job showing us just how important these moments were for Ty and for Darian, even though she is not quite aware of it at the time.
We meet a pretty cool character in this book. Kaii is so fascinating! Funny thing about Kaii is that Tyler has no idea if it’s a he or a she. Kaii always covers his/her face and head so there is no way of knowing. And even when the cover is removed, it’s unsure. All we know is that Kaii is one hell of an assassin and someone you would not want to cross. I am leaning towards his being a dude. But I may be wrong. I am very curious about this character and am hoping to find out more in future stories.
While reading, we also learn a few tidbits about Ty that I would not have guessed. I really enjoyed getting to know Ty a little better because he really is a great character – one of my favorite in the series.
Lost to the Gray is a wonderful addition to the series. Fans of the series have to check it out. And I would strongly recommend reading it before reading Crave the Darkness, the third book in the series that is releasing on March 5th 2013. This novella really explains Ty and helps us understand his behavior a bit more in Crave.
All in all, a great read. Read this series and read this book.
Favorite quote –
“’The thing about Jinn,’ Levi continued as if talking to himself, ‘is that you’re all so freaking protective. Seriously, dude, it makes you all a little batshit insane if you ask me.’”
