Guest Post – Kate SeRine on Playing Matchmaker plus giveaway

Kate SeRine PhotoKate SeRine is the author of the highly inventive and extraordinary series The Transplanted Tales.  Her books are about fairy tale and other literary folk living alongside the rest of us here in the Ordinary.  You have never read anything like this even if you’ve read tons of books about fairy tale folk “re-written”.  It truly is an amazing series – one that I recommend to everyone.

Kate is here today to chat about how she came up with one of her more interesting pairings:  Seth the Big Bad Wolf and Lavender, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother.

The floor is yours Kate!

One of my favorite things about writing romance is playing matchmaker to my characters. It gives me an immense sense of satisfaction when I bring them together, often against all odds, and eventually lead them to Happily Ever After. But pairing up the characters in my Transplanted Tales series presented some challenges—a big one being that these characters already had stories with which readers were familiar. And I realized if I ended up making a bad “match” for them, I was going to catch hell for it!

When I decided to pair up Lavender Seelie (Cinderella’s fairy godmother) and Seth Wolf in THE BETTER TO SEE YOU, I knew it was a little risky and might raise a few eyebrows. I mean, isn’t the Big Bad Wolf inextricably connected to Little Red Riding Hood in our minds? But with Tess “Red” Little already spoken for after finding her true love with Nate Grimm in RED, I needed to find a suitable woman who would “get” Seth and offer him the love and strength he needed to overcome his past and finally allow him to embrace the happiness he deserved.

So why pair him up with a recovering alcoholic fairy godmother whose magic is on the fritz?

Well, here’s a glimpse into the method behind my matchmaking madness: Seth comes with a lot of baggage and a reputation that has made him a pariah among the Tales. Even before coming over, this much-maligned werewolf was trying to outrun his past. So, really, who better to understand Seth than another outcast who is struggling to re-write her story, too?

Guilt-ridden by her role in bringing the Tales into the Here and Now, Lavender’s life has completely fallen apart. When I wrote her few short scenes in RED, I realized her road to redemption could be a compelling story, and I knew it would take the love of a man strong enough to see past her reputation and insecurities to help Lavender believe in herself again and remind her of what a remarkable woman she truly is. And, like Seth, Lavender desperately wants to be seen (and loved) for who she really is. They were meant for each other!

Don’t get me wrong—their love story isn’t without its obstacles. Seth is distrustful of all things magical because of the curse that condemned him to be a werewolf. And Lavender is still battling a few personal demons and struggling to find her place in the world again. Not to mention, there are external forces that jeopardize their happy ending. But, through their love, Seth and Lavender will finally be able to heal themselves and each other and find their way to happily ever after. 🙂
