Kick Ass Chick – Beri O’Dell

From Goodreads –
Beri O’Dell is on a mission. She has to rip back into a hell dimension fast, but needs two things first—the blood of an ancient and a fix for her friend Blythe’s magic, which careened out of control after the battle with the Dweller.

Finding ancient blood isn’t easy when the old ones are rare and unwilling to donate. She needs to find Blythe’s former mentor…except the woman has lost her mind and joined a traveling band of singing witches.

That’s not the only magical monkey on her back. Nikolos is imprisoned, and after a screwed-up spell lets her witness the horror that has become his life, her fear for him grows by the day. Now there’s another problem—a powerful being unleashed during the battle with the Dweller likes her gluttonous new existence, and will kill anyone who threatens it.

But Beri has a few tricks up her costumed sleeve, even if it means mining the darkness of her soul to set everything right…and get Nikolos back in her arms

Blood of an Ancient is the second book in Rinda Elliott’s Beri O’Dell series and let me tell you, I liked this book as much as I did the first.  And I liked that one a lot.

Book two starts off pretty much exactly where book one left off and those of you who have read it will be grateful for that.  Yeah…  Book one ended on a bit of a doozied note.

Beri is still a mystery but you do get many hints about what or who she really is.  And of course by ‘hints’ I mean teases.  Her abilities have grown and are becoming more vast.  We do eventually get a huge bit of information about her and it’s guaranteed to shock you.  And also make you think “ah, that is very interesting and sort of makes sense!”  I really like Beri.  She does not try to be perfect or a strong-single-minded-superhero.  She is vulnerable and tough yet loyal and kind.  She is all about helping others but she’s not a pushover.  She wants her mate back and she is willing to do what she must to get him.  She is fierce in this book but she doesn’t lose the softness that I really like about her.  She is a wonderful character to read.

Castor is Beri’s brother and boy do I ever like him!  We didn’t see too much of him in the last book but I’m glad there is much more of him now.  We are staring to crack what he is all about and I can’t wait to see what comes next for him.

We see more of Nicolos than I was expected seeing that he is trapped where he is trapped and all.  He is such a compelling and yummy character!  What happened to him will seriously affect him in future books, that I’m certain of, and I am curious to see how Rinda plans on writing him next.

All of the other characters we meet in the first book make appearances in this one too.  Blythe was a big surprise in this book!  I mean where she comes from and her parents and…  Just mind boggling.  I can’t wait for you to discover all about her too!  The vampire we meet is so awesome!  And there are some other new characters that I can see playing a good role in this series and I am curious to see if I am right.

Rinda writes interesting twists when it comes to her paranormal creatures.  You don’t encounter only your ‘usual’ beings, and I like that.  Also unusual is how Rinda writes the Underworld.  Very unique and tons of fun to read.

The story this time around is a lot more than I was expecting.  I assumed it would just be about what happened at the end of the first book but nope.  So much more.  And once again, the ending leaves you with your jaw hitting the floor.  I know there is a third book in the works but no word yet on when it will be releasing.  And that’s too bad because I WANT IT NOW!

All in all, Rinda writes an exceptional continuation to her series with Blood of the Ancient.  The pace was perfect, the story keeps you on the edge of your seat and all of the characters put a smile on your face, even when you want to cry for them.  There are tons of twists and surprises to keep you guessing and to keep you wanting more.  I am really enjoying this urban fantasy series and I hope there will be many more installments to come.

Giggle worthy quotes

“Blythe pulled something from her pocket and I held my breath.  It was the drawstring bag that carried her rune stones.  I had the oddest fascination with the damn things.  ‘Are you going to cast about Sophie?  Can the runes actually tell us where to find the traveling, singing witches?’

She scowled at me.  ‘It’s too early for sarcasm.’

I lifted an eyebrow, met Phro’s amused gaze, then cautiously tried another sip of coffee.  A traveling band of singing witches is funny.  It just is.”

“’I think we’re going to have to get down there fast.  It’s either that or we lose our bargaining chip because you see that thing?’

Phro leaned over and squinted again before she shuddered.  ‘The demon scavenger.  I’ve heard about him.  Eurynomus.  He’ll wait until she dies before he starts eating her.’

‘Ew.  Okay, so, let’s figure out how we’re getting down.  Think these notches are supposed to be footholds?’

‘You try them first,’ Phro suggested.

I chuckled and hit her with me shoulder.  ‘You are like the worst protector ever.’”
