Question – Who Are Some Of Your Favorite Badass Heroines?

Question Visual Again

The Barnes & Noble blog posted a very interesting article last week.  The author Paul Goat Allan listed his list for the 10 most badass women in fantasy literature. Among his picks are the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, Sabina Kane from Jaye Wells’ series, Gin Blanco from Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series and Kate Daniels from Ilona Andrews series (boo ya!).

I would definitely agree with Kate Daniels and Gin Blanco.  I have only read one Sabina Kane book but from what I saw in that one she should be on that list too.  But I do have a couple that were not on Paul’s list that would be on my list.

I feel Xhex from the Black Dagger Brotherhood books is one of the most badass chicks out there.  I also feel Secret McQueen from Sierra Dean’s series deserves to be there too.  What makes a heroine badass AND memorable is the fact that the author can make her vulnerable, relatable and likable even though the characters main purpose is to kick ass.  And I feel that JR and Sierra along with Jennifer and Ilona accomplish that with their heroines.

Two others that could easily go on a badass heroines list would be Cat Crawford from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series and Elena Deveraux from Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series.

What about you?  Who are some of you favorite badass heroines?

  1. In the book world one of my favorites is Kelley Armstrong’s Eve.

  2. I have a few lets see… Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, Claire(Outlander), Mac and Charley Davidson.
I have a few on their way to joining the list, but they are not quite there yet.

  3. Northwoman says:

I agree with Lupdilup – Mercy Thompson and Charley Davidson could be on the list, and with you about Cat Crawford.

  4. Mackayla! Wow what she goes goes through!

I’d also say Claire from Outlander. Not because she is a bad ass fighter but she is a bad ass, no nonsense woman.

I’d also add Katniss from The Hunger Games.

    I also agree about Xhex.

  5. Merrit, sentinel of the Cadogan House vampires in the Chicagoland vampire series by Chloe Neil ranks high on my list.

Then there’s Queen Annwyl of G.A. Aiken’s Dragon series.

I’m also very fond of Shelly Laurenston’s shifter novels, and two of those women stand out: Sissy Mae Smith, the former Special Forces operative (and wolf shifter), as well as Marcella-“Bare Knuckles”-Malone, hockey star and international feline protection agent (and Siberian tiger).

  6. Although I love many of the characters mentioned above, and they are very cool, they aren’t all bad asses. Mercy and Mac are great, but they aren’t really bad ass. They often fall into traditional/stereotypical gender roles and requiring rescue from the “male meathead”(B&N story). I know Mercy is the mechanic, but it isn’t until book 7 that she finally decides to use her alpha powers and is the one to control the power games and rescue everyone, up until then, one of her super friends has always come through to rescue her (I actually think Anna from Alpha and Omega is much more bad ass than Mercy); and Mac uses sex and Barrons to get out of most situations. Katniss, Xhex, and for the most part Cat and Elena are all excellent badass alpha heroines. I would include bad asses Evalle Kincaid from the Belador series; and Cass Dollar from Sophie Littlefield’s Aftertime series. I think Rachel Morgan, Dorina Basarab and Granuaile like Mercy are really close to being true badasses, they have great potential.

  7. Erica Pillera says:

Renata from Veil of Midnight by Lara Adrian Kicks serious ass
    and Mira when shes older

Agree with Mzcue Annwyl from G A Aiken Dragon Series is fierce!!!

  8. I’d agree with Nikki, a lot of the characters mentioned, whilst great in their own way, aren’t necessarily badass. I totally agree with Jane Yellowrock being on the original list, she’s great and I also think Merit, Secret, Rachel Morgan and Charley Davidson deserve places too. I’d add Jessica McClain and Gabi, from a new series called Hellcat I’ve just discovered by Sharon Hannaford. She’s very cool and kicks some serious butt.

  9. Oh yes Kate, Secret, Darian but also so many others like Rachel Morgan, Alex craft…

  10. Viki – *sigh* I really have to read that series…

    Lupdilup – Love Charley!!

    Northwoman – 🙂

Michelle – Katniss is a good one. I have not read the books but from what I saw in the movie she makes sense.

Mzcue – Merit is a good one too 🙂

Nikki – I agree with you that Mercy is just coming into her badass-ness.

Erica – Renata is a great one! Love her!

Sarah – I really have to try the Jane Yellowrock series!

Melliane – Darian! Good one 🙂
