Kick Ass Chick – Merit

From Goodreads

“Merit, Chicago’s newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene—and to spy for the vamps while she’s at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan’s offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment, even though she knows that she’ll probably regret it. And she’s not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She’ll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals—not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries old master vampire.”

(Be warned, this review contains spoilers)

I’ve been wondering how on earth am I ever going to be able to write a review about this whole book, when there is one chapter in particular that is stuck in my head.  In fact, it’s pretty much all I’ve been thinking about since I’ve read it.  I think it’s one of the best chapters I’ve ever read.  It’s sweet, raw, romantic, swoon worthy and very Very sexy.  Of course, I am talking about Chapter 8.  *sigh* Chapter 8…  But that’s probably not the best place to start this review.  So, I suppose I’ll start at the beginning…

“Twice Bitten” is the third book in Chloe Neill’s ‘Chicagoland Vampires’ series – and so far it’s my favorite.   The story is exciting, the twists are invigorating and the romantic tension between Merit and Ethan is sizzling!  We get a real good look at the shifter community as Merit and Ethan are asked to stand guard during a very important gathering of the packs.  I really liked the Alpha of all Alphas, Gabriel Keene!  He is sharp as a character and you immediately feel his pull.  You fear for his safety while you admire him for his commitment to his pack.  He makes a good Alpha – one you want to stand behind.

Now that I got Gabriel out of the way, why don’t I just continue to what you all want to know about:  the men of ‘Chicagoland’.  We don’t see much of Morgan in this installment.  I don’t dislike him, but I don’t love him anymore either.  Let’s just say I don’t wish him unwell and I hope he does well as Navarre’s new Master.  We also don’t see much of Catcher.  But what we do see is just as satisfying as in the last two books.  He’s funny and clever, plain and simple.  We see a little Mallory too (I know, not a man, but I’ll stick her here just the same).  The short scene with the cat…HiLLariOUs!  Now we may not see much of these beloved characters, but we do see much of Ethan.  Boy, do you see lots of Ethan!..which takes me back to Chapter 8.

It is titled ‘Hungry Eyes’.  Before reading this book, the title would bring me back to Dirty Dancing and yummy Patrick Swayze wooing a sweet and naive Baby.  Now, the title will forever make me think of Ethan!  Oh my… *blush*Chloe shows us that it is possible to write a love scene without using harsh words or crass imagery and descriptions.  This chapter is Hot with a capital H.  You really feel Ethan’s need and passion and Merit’s desire and love.  Two people who just have to be together and who just can’t fight it anymore.  *Sigh* Will it all last?  Well, we are talking about Ethan here – and that’s all I’m going to say about that…

“Twice Bitten” is a fantastic addition to the series.  When you finally discover who is behind the badness in this story, you just cry out ‘whoa dude!’  I could not put this one down once I started reading it.  I even made my kids Kraft Dinner and skipped bath time so I could put them to bed a little earlier and read longer (and ultimately finish the book at midnight that night).  I’m not proud of it, but that’s just how good the book was for me.  Would you get as much out of it if you had not read the previous books?  No.  But if you have read them, you just HAVE to pick this one up.

Team update?!  I still love Catcher, but I am now Team Ethan.  I just hope he doesn’t act like too much of an ass in the next book (“Hard Bitten” due out July 2011) because I think I would like to stay on team Ethan.  Especially after reading Chapter 8.  😉

Swoon worthy quote

“’You undo me, Merit.  Wholly and completely.  You don’t take me at my word.  You challenge me at every opportunity.  And that means when I’m with you, I am less than the head of this House…and I am more than the head of this House.  I am a man.’  He strokes my cheeks with his thumbs.  ‘In my very, very long life, I need you more than I have ever needed anything.’

This time, I didn’t wait for him to move.”

  1. Spoilers included!!!
Love this review and I couldn’t agree more. I absolutely adored that chapter and have read it over and over. His words were so heartfelt. It crushed me when he decided he couldn’t be with her anymore. I truly felt for Merit and my heart ached for her. The ending was wonderful though with the baseball, shows he pays attention and that hes willing to work to win her back. Hopefully we see a reconciliation in the next book. Chloe has said that Merit will get her happily ever after by the end, I just hope its with Ethan! 🙂 I have read so many of these types of books and honestly I have to say these two are my favorite.

  2. Chrissy – I agree with you 100%! (and I hope her HEA is with Ethan too!)

  7. Jesus, you’re fucking dumb. Teli understood the concept, they were referring to the ending where it was never made clear if he was cleaning new stains, or the old ones. Also, this story was shit. It was painful to read.VA:F [1.9.21_1169](from 6 votes)

  8. your satire often scares me because I know that somewhere, someone is making the same argument un-ironically. Case in point.I was a bit scared until the link to the Sun showed up though. Thought you might have had an unfortunate pony-trauma that left your brain scrambled.
