Question – Most Evil / Worst / Best Cliffhanger Ever?

Question Visual Again

A couple of weeks ago, I asked your opinion about release dates and how you feel when they are constantly being pushed back.  In that post, I talked about the cliffhanger at the end of Karen Marie Moning’s Dreamfever and how I felt it was the most evil/awesome cliffhanger that I have ever read.  But there are a lot of books out there that I have not read.

After that Question, Aurian emailed me suggesting I make cliffhangers the topic of a future Question – and I thought that was a great idea.

Other than KMM’s Dreamfever, Carolyn Crane’s Double Cross has a pretty insane cliffhanger.  And, as Aurian pointed out, we can’t overlook Sierra Dean’s absolutely evil cliffhangers in her Secret McQueen series.  I STILL remember the one she gave us at the end of Something Secret This Way Comes!

How about you?  What are some of the best/worst/most evil cliffhangers you have ever read?

  1. Agree! Dreamfever was, and still is the most insane cliffhanger ever!!! I don’t have others because since that book I won’t start a series where you guys have mentioned a bad cliffhanger, and I already have the next book in hand.

  2. KMM by far the worse! I didn’t even read the first 5 books till they were all out but she is the worst 🙂

  3. I think the way Chloe Neill left thing in Drink Deep was bad. It wasn’t really a cliffhanger but you won’t forget it.

    KMM’s cliffhangers though……

  4. Totally agree with KMM’s Dreamfever and Chloe Neill, but I’ll also add in Richelle Mead’s Shadow Kiss. That was a crazy cliffhanger for Rose and Dimitri! (Not sure if you’ve read Vampire Academy, Julie, but they’re great!) And Cecy Robson has some UGH! cliffhangers, too! Another author I don’t know if you’ve read, Nicole Peeler, had a crazy cliffhanger at the end of Tempest’s Fury for Jane and Anyan. I wanted to yell at her over facebook, but she’s way too nice to do that to!

  5. I am so with you on the Karen Marie Moning series. I waited to read that series till they were all published. I am not sure I could have handled that cliffhanger if I didnt have the next book in my hand 2 seconds after I finished the previous one.

I know you don’t read Diana Gabaldon, but her last book Echo in the Bone ended on 5 different cliffhangers!!!! AAAAANNNNND we had to wait YEARS to get the next book. In fact, we are still waiting!! June June June finally JUNE! At least she provides little daily snippents that helps us through the wait.

  6. You also named Rachel Caine as Queen of Cliffhangers, and as I am reading the Morganville Vampires, I have to agree on that. Every single book has an ending that makes you crave the next one. Lucky for me, I do have the whole series by now.
But yes, Sierra Dean sure knows how to torture her readers with them.
Another one, Jenn Bennett in her third Cady book. That ending killed me.

Do you think Canadian authors are trained to write cliffhangers? Do they share the same evil editor perhaps who loves them?
I think it is especially fun for Urban Fantasy authors to do that, paranormal romance ends mostly with HEA.

  7. The book that I am waiting most on to read right now is Jenn Bennett’s 4th Cady Bell, the ending of that 3rd book had me stunned for days. Also the cliffhanger after book 1 of Amanda Carlson’s Jessica McClain series was a long wait . Sierra Dean had me too, love that series.

  8. Marlene Howard says:

Hunt the Moon by Karen Chance book 4 in the Cassie Palmer series left a major cliffhanger. It was 2 years before the next book came out. I was so mad you never saw it coming I am glad I was at home people would have thought I was nuts. I hate cliffhangers I try to read reviews so that I can wait for the next book.

  9. Lupdilup – I agree. It is hard starting a new book knowing that the ending is evil lol.

Felicia – Wow. Not to have to wait until the next book and STILL thinking it’s the worst!

Coleen – Oh yes. Drink Deep. That was a bad one too!

Lizzie Dee – Cecy is growing more evil, I agree with you there lol

Michelle – YEARS!?! That would hurt!

aurian – Yes, it seems to be mostly an UF thing. That is part of what makes it so fun to read! lol

Sarah – I read Jenn’s 4th book and whoa!!! Amazing!

Marlene – The cliffhangers you never see coming…those are the worst!
