Review: Sweet Persuasion by Maya Banks (Sweet #2) and Giveaway!
June 2 2009
Yummy Man – Damon Roche
Kick Ass Chick – Serena James
“For five years, Serena has run Fantasy Incorporated and devoted her time to fulfilling her clients’ fantasies, but never her own. Until now… Her most secret desire is to give ownership of her body to a man. Someone who will command her, pleasure her, and have complete authority over her. So she seeks out Damon Roche, owner of an exclusive sex club and a man strong enough to make her do anything he wants. Anything.”
Prior to this one, I had only read one erotica book – and I had ordered that one online. (You can read all about my erotica reading experience in Thursday’s ‘My Life’s Quirks’) Jason never saw the cover for my first — and honestly, the cover wasn’t that much different than your typical paranormal romance book jacket. So poor Jason had no way of knowing that I had begun dabbling in erotica. Maya Banks’ “Sweet Persuasion” was his first clue. Yes, this is the book. The book I told you about in ‘How It All Began’. This is the first and only book that once Jason arrived home from his errand at the book store, he whipped it out of the bag and said “Are you kidding me?! People were looking at me! I just kept saying over and over that it’s for my wife and not me!” Honestly, I giggled but I couldn’t blame him. I mean just look at this cover. Just one look and you KNOW you’re going to get a sexy, steamy, passion filled book!
Now, how did I choose this book to be my second ever erotica title? Well, I was in the mood to read something a little steamier than I had been. It was Friday, and for a reason I can’t explain, I thought reading something a little smuttier than usual would be a nice weekend treat. So I did my research. I typed in the site I visited the most often on my computer –Romantic Times Magazine (this was before discovering Goodreads). I did a search by genre and rating. I wanted the impossible: an erotic book with a 4.5G rating (their highest rating that is nearly impossible to come by). And there it was, right in front of me. “Sweet Persuasion” by Maya Banks. I read the blurb and it sounded…hot! I had never read a book about a completely dominant man and a completely submissive woman. Would I like it? Would the woman be weak? Would the man be an ass? To appease my curiosity, I decided to give this book a chance. So I called the book store near my hubby’s work and asked them to put it aside (hence the scene that occurred once he arrived home).
I LOVE this book. The story, the characters, the sex. All of it! Serena is wonderful and Damon… Well, Damon is velvet! Serena James is feeling a little blah. She wants to be completely taken care of by a man. She wants to be owned by a man but she’s afraid that allowing this to happen will make her weak and will make her lose her sense of self. She thinks that maybe if she were to experience what it was like to be a man’s ‘slave’ during a temporary arrangement, she will get these lost feelings out of her mind and be able to get back to normal without feeling as though she’s sold herself out. Enter Damon Roche. Damon agrees to be the man to help Serena with her desires. And boy does he ever! He takes care of everything – what she wears, how she eats, what “extra-curricular activities” they will partake in and how often…
Now I found that reading about a dominant man who controls every aspect of a woman’s everything to be surprisingly very hot. Off the page and in real life? I don’t know how I would handle it. Actually, yes I do… After a couple of minutes I would tell the guy “Whoa, wait up there dude! I can pick my own bra and feed myself thank you very much…and don’t be puttin’ that thing anywhere near my butt!” But for some reason, reading about how Damon is with Serena makes my knees weak. I think it has something to do with how he does it. The attention he gives her and the care he takes with her. Of course he is getting something out of the arrangement too, but it’s mostly Serena who is getting the opportunity to feel like a queen. Not just any queen, Damon’s one and only queen (because Damon doesn’t share *swoon*).
I really appreciate how Maya Banks deals with the dominant sex part of the book. There are no titles. And when Serena asks Damon about a safe word, Damon tells her that he doesn’t believe in them. He feels that a woman saying “no” should never be dismissed and that if she says no, everything stops immediately. Good man that Damon Roche.
Not only did I devour this book, I had Jason pick up the other two books in the series the very next day – and I pre-ordered the fourth book as soon as it became available to do so. Every book in this series is Hot, Sexy and filled with steamy Steamy sex scenes. But you don’t just read them for the sex (okay, not only for the sex ;)). The stories are entertaining and the characters are top notch. They are likable and have heart.
“Sweet Persuasion” is primarily Damon and Serena’s story, but you also get to visit with the other characters that you previously meet in “Sweet Surrender”. These are stand alone books, but you miss out on some pretty impressive character development if you read them out of sequence. The characters really are outstanding. The men are sexy and funny. The women are smart and sassy. Did I mention the men are sexy?! Yeah, they’re just a whole lot of sexy…
Swoon worthy quote
“You’ll call me Damon. I see no need for dramatic titles. I, on the other hand will call you beautiful, lover, mine. I’ll call you mine.”
