Authors Answer: My Favorite Foreign Cover (plus giveaway)

Book covers.  There is just something about the cover of a book that makes we bookaholics quiver.  We anticipate a book’s release but we also anticipate a book’s cover release.  They are just so gosh darn pretty and they draw us in, making us want to read a book even more than we already do.

It’s tough to imagine, when we walk into a bookstore to stare at all the pretties, that there are many more covers, different interpretations, for these same books that we have never seen!  I am talking about the covers for the foreign editions.

I thought it would be a fun post to ask some of our favorite authors to see which of their foreign book cover they like the most.  At the same time, it will introduce you guys to some covers that you may not have ever seen.

Jeaniene Frost

“This is the German cover for my seventh Night Huntress novel, called Up From The Grave in English. I don’t know what it’s called in German, so if you sprechen sie Deutsch, please tell me what it says ;). I really love this cover because it shows Cat, my heroine of the series, a lot like how I picture her. The model doesn’t look tough or badass; she looks young, lovely and gentle. That’s how Cat would look…right up until she stabbed you through the heart or ripped your head off. Cat’s young, sweet appearance was her disguise, and she loved being discounted as harmless because of her looks. Furthermore, in my books, a vampire’s eyes turn green when their emotions flare, so the model’s bright green eyes was a nice touch.”

Julie James

“I couldn’t decide which of my foreign book covers is my favorite, so I took a poll on my Facebook page and asked readers to decide. I got a wide variety of responses—clearly, there are just too many great covers to choose from! But, the cover that received the most votes was the Indonesian cover of LOVE IRRESISTIBLY. I think it might be the heroine’s hair—which I totally covet. :)”

Kelley Armstrong

armstrongB“My answer might be a little different from most. My favourite foreign covers are the weird ones, the ones where I can’t help but suspect the art folks knew little about the book and just picked something they thought would sell. The best are my Polish covers. I have two faves there. In second place is the cover for my cowritten middle-grade Loki’s Wolves. Like the English cover, it shows the two main kids and wolves. Except…well, zombies must sell really well in Poland, because the kids look undead. The winner, though, is the Polish cover for Stolen, the second in my Otherworld series.  The book is about a female werewolf who is taken captive for medical research. The cover…appears to be a woman transforming into a tree. Also, she’s wearing a gown diaphanous enough to show everything. The books sell quite well in Poland, though, so I’m not going to argue. I definitely won’t say it’s “better” than my US cover, but it’s a whole lot more interesting!”

Jennifer Estep

“So Julie asked me to talk about some of the foreign covers for my books today. I really like the German covers for my Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series. Every cover is basically white, with a different color for the girl’s eyes and the type. It’s very minimalist, but I think that it’s a cool, interesting look for the series.

estepBThe German covers for my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series are also interesting. They are sort of similar to my Mythos Academy covers in that a woman’s face is a big part of the cover.

But I have to say that I still like the U.S. covers the best, especially for my Elemental Assassin series. Tony Mauro, the cover artist for that series, has done a great job of capturing my main character, Gin Blanco, and the city of Ashland. So those will probably always be among my favorite covers.

What about you guys? What are some of your favorite book covers?”

Thank you SO much to Jeaniene, Julie, Kelley and Jennifer for telling us all about their favorite foreign covers today.  It’s just incredible how differently the stories are interpreted in each country to cause the designers to come up with such unique covers!

Now for the giveaway.  I am going to give to TWO lucky winners any TWO books from the participating authors.  So the winner can pick any book of their choosing by Jeaniene Frost, Julie James, Kelley Armstrong and/or Jennifer Estep.  To enter, just leave a comment below answering Jennifer’s question:  What are some of your favorite book covers?  The covers you mention don’t need to be international – they could be US covers too.  Please leave your comment by Wednesday June 25th 2014 11:59pm EST.  Giveaway open to anywhere the Book Depository ships.  Good luck!
