Question – Do You Re-read Your Favorite Long-Running Series Before the Last Releases?

Question Visual Again

This week’s Question was suggested by Jessica from Rabid Reads. In fact, she emailed me with a long list FULL of wonderful Question suggestions! I’m sure you will be seeing more of her Questions soon 🙂

As for why I picked the one I did for this week…well, it just seemed fitting. You see, Anne has been hosting a Read-Along for Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series almost every Wednesday here on the blog since May. This Wednesday, the before last book in the series will be featured.  The reason for this read-along?  The final book in the series, book number thirteen The Witch With No Name, is releasing September 9th 2014.  Good reason for a read-along I think.

Anne, along with Jessica and some wonderful readers including Aimee, Janice, Charlotte, Bonnie, Linda, Erica and more, has been re-reading this series in preparation for the eagerly anticipated finale.  (Well, technically, Anne is reading this series for the first time while the others are re-reading and along for the ride.  It’s fun to see someone’s reaction to a book you’ve read before, isn’t’ it?!)

Which brings up the question, do you guys do the same?  Do you re-read a favorite long-running series before the last book releases?

I have done this once.  I re-read the Fever books before Karen Marie Moning released Shadowfever.  I have re-read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books before Lover Mine came out.  Or was it Lover Unleashed?...  Doesn’t matter.  The point is I did re-read books from JR Ward’s BDB series before a book came out.

I wanted to read Sierra Dean’s Secret McQueen series before reading the final book but didn’t.  I got the last book, which releases in December, in my hands super early and there is no way I was going to be able to put it aside while I read books one through seven before cracking it open.  I find though that some series almost require a re-read, what with all the details the series contains.  The Fever books are some such books.  The detail!  Easy to get lost in and forget.  I may have re-read more series before final books released if I had more time though.  I would have loved to re-read Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series before Banishing the Dark released.  LOVE that series…but time didn’t allow it.

Back to the Secret McQueen books for a moment, Sierra is posting a couple posts a month, here and there in blogland, each featuring one Secret McQueen novel or novella.  She’s sharing little known or unknown facts and supplying a little background information for each book.  (She’ll be here in November to talk about Secret Unleashed!)  The first post came out last week over at RR@H Novel Thoughts & Book Talk.  If you are a fan of the series, follow along.  What Sierra shares is really cool!  If you have not read the books yet, DO IT!  Now is the perfect time.  🙂

You’re turn to answer my Question of the week.  Do you re-read before a final book comes out?

  1. I have done this with a couple of series and wish I had time to do it with more. I want to relisten to the entire Hollows series before Witch with No Name comes out, but there isn’t enough time. 🙁

  2. SOmetimes I do. It depends on the series though. LIke the Fever series I did. Well that series I have re-read so many times and never get sick of it. I”ll re-read it again before Burned too. Haha. =)))

  3. Northwoman says:

I love the idea especially with favorite series. It is difficult to find the time. I have to schedule. What I’m reading now. But it’s more of a list of the order of what I’m reading. Some weeks are more reading than others and some books are faster to read. It’s REALLY hard to predict tho.

  4. I have done it, but more often than not, I don’t find out early enough that the next installment in one of my fav series is actually the last one, so I’m always too late for a re-read. Plus, time is always of the essence which makes it even more difficult. I find that audiobooks are a great way to go when revisiting a series though because they almost make the world feel new again.

  5. It depends on how much I remember. Some books are quite memorable and details stick with me, other books that I go to pick up the last book/next book and I can’t remember a thing about the books.

Case in point, I am getting ready to re-read the first three in Yasmine Galenorn’s Indigo Court series as it is now finished and I have the last two. I remembered that I really enjoyed them, but can’t remember a thing about them.

  6. I find I just don’t have the time to re-read all of those books before the latest book or the last book in the series. So now I usually wait until the entire series is out before I dive in. I started The Iron King on audio about two months ago, completed it and read The Iron Daughter this month, next month I might read the third and fourth book. This way I lost nothing from the storyline since I will read them all pretty much back to back each month. I hate waiting to find out what happens especially with YA books so I like to wait to just collect the whole series and read it all together.
    Great question!
