My Life’s Quirks – The Awesomeness That Is

katedanielsaudiobookAs some of you know, I’ve been devouring audio books lately.  I would say that half of the books I listen to are new-to-me reads and the other half are books I’ve read and loved and wanted to re-read but haven’t had the chance and therefore am doing so by listening to them.

I’ve done this with the Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews (narrated by the amazing Renée Raudman) and with the Charley Davidson books by Darynda Jones (narrated by the equally amazing Lorelei King).  Listening to the books reminded me how amazing these authors and series are.  And I love how I pick up things I either missed or had forgotten from the first time around.

A short while back, I listened to Written in Red by Anne Bishop (narrated by Alexandra Harris) and I found that I loved it just as much as when I read it.  I got caught up in listening to a rather addictive contemporary romance series and found I needed something to listen to now that I finished said addictive series, that would sweep me up and capture me completely (because I knew otherwise I would be listening to the ‘new’ book but thinking about the other ones)  I decided that Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop was a solid choice, and I was right.  Holy man do I love that book!  Simon and Meg and the Others and the story!..  All awesome.

This post has a point other than my telling you that I re-read via audiobook.

I find what surprises me the most is when I re-read/listen to a book I know I’ve loved when reading it the first time, I still LOVE the book the second time (third time, fourth time) around.  And sometimes, I enjoy it even more because I can truly focus on the little things I may have accidentally missed the first time around or I can focus on my most favorite parts because the stress of ‘OMGwhathappensnext?!’ is gone.  These books are still, and I believe will always be, awesome to me.

I know I’m not the only one who is equally amazed by the awesomeness that is a favorite book each and every time I read it.  But am I the only one who is surprised by how much I love them every time?

The awesomeness that is Kate Daniels, Charley Davidson, The Others and more of my favorite re-reads.  Just another one of my life’s quirks.

  1. That is how I first got into audiobook, by listening to books I had already read. Now I listen to more than I read and will usually pick audio over reading, if available. You mentioned two of my three favorite audiobook series. I would HIGHLY recommend Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series on audio. You have great stories with action and humor, paired with a phenomenal narrator in Robert Petkoff.

  2. Half of the joy of re-reads to me, since I only do it with series I really like on occasion, is being able to skip the less stellar parts because I know what I’m skipping.

This is generally POV shifts, like the mountain man POV in Patricia Brigg’s first full-length Alpha & Omega book, and if I cared to reread Black Dagger Brotherhood, most of the bad guy POVs… more time with my favorite lead/side characters.

I only tend to reread consistently 4-to-5-star book series. If I was rereading 3-to-4-star books their rating would probably go down, because I have more better books to rate them against now than I did when I first read them.

  3. I love to hear you say this Julie! GOD knows I spent more than a year trying to convert you into a an audio junkie and after a while I finally gave up….lol I’m so thrilled that you have found the magic 🙂 A lot my listens have been re-reads b/c the audios came out way after the printed copy, and like you I have love so many of them so much more on audio, but I’m also demanding of the narration after have read the book.
    Great post!

  4. Yes! I’m happy you finally jump on the audiobook wagon. I’m also listening to Charley Davidson’s audios and loving them. I even got my sister interested. Now that I’m visiting, we are listening together while we are in the car, even my nephew is into them. 🙂
