Review: Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Dark-Hunter #2)
St. Martin’s Paperbacks
Yummy Man – Talon
Kick Ass Chick – Sunshine
From Sherrilyn Kenyon’s website
“’Night Embrace’ spins the story of Talon, an ancient Celtic warrior who killed the son of the god Camulus. Camulus cursed Talon, decreeing death for everyone he loved. Now a Dark-Hunter in modern-day New Orleans, Talon meets Sunshine, who is key to ending his curse once and for all. Not to mention helping him to save New Orleans from an ancient god bent on total destruction…”
This is technically the third book in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series, but really it’s the second one that truly takes place in the Dark-Hunter world.
I really liked Talon and Sunshine together. She is forgetful and funny and really is the perfect complement for our brooding hero. She helps bring out Talon’s soft side – and isn’t that the heroine’s job in any book that centers on an ominous hero?! Boy oh boy though… I thought the boys from the Black Dagger Brotherhood had it rough when they were younger! They ain’t got nothin’ on the Dark-Hunters! Talk about horrific childhoods and young adulthoods! Talon’s youth is gut wrenchingly painful to read about! You just want to run onto the page and give him a hug. And then maybe lick him a little. It’s amazing that he still remembers how to smile while he’s drinking his coffee and eating his beignets.
I really like how Sherrilyn’s “vampire world” is linked to Greek mythology. Very cool! Lots and lots of characters are introduced in this book too. Thank goodness for the author’s web site to help you keep them all in line. One of my favorite recurring characters is Nick. He is supplying just the right amount of comic relief! And I really love Acheron too. I can’t believe I have to read what, 12 more books before getting to his story?! I find myself wondering if he get his soul back too?! *Sigh* Alas, I’ll have to wait for that answer… but it’s okay. If the first books in this series are any indication, I’ll really enjoy the journey to his book!
Giggle worthy quote
(Nick to Talon) “Clean it up, hell. Do you know how many cameras just caught your stunt-jump from upstairs? My mom now thinks you’re on the drugs she suspects Kyrian sells. We’re screwed. My life is toast. I’m about to get lectured about working for drug dealers…again. My mom, bless her heart, is so goofy, she doesn’t even realize she works for bears. I’m so screwed.”
