Question – Is There Such a Thing as Too Many Favorites?

“What’s your favorite book?” Aug! Those of us who are passionate readers absolutely HATE that question! It’s like asking us to pick a favorite child or to select a favorite pair of shoes or to choose a favorite kind of cookie (Oreo. Okay, maybe that last one wasn’t the best example).

I’ve been slowly adding books and series of books to my Favorites page since I really got into reading. At first, the list was short. Once a book lands on my list, I contact the author to have her sign my copy of their book (hence my Signature Collection). At first, I was happy to tell the authors that my list was quite short because I was rather picky as to what I put on there. But the more I read, the more titles began joining the original ones. And as my list grows, I wonder if the authors that I contact are bothered that I have a heftier list now. Will they not feel as ‘special’? Really, I don’t add new books all the time – I’m still quite picky. If I know that I could potentially re-read a book I’ve just read as soon as I’ve finished it, I’ll give it 5 stars. Therefore I may give out 5 star ratings to a fair amount of books, but that doesn’t make them my favorites. Also, my list might look long because if I love a certain series and if this series has 9 books in it, all 9 books end up on my list regardless of the individual book’s rating. Just wait to see my list when I reach book 19 of the Dark-Hunter series!

This leads me to my question for you today: Is there such a thing as too many favorite books / series?

  1. Girl, I love, love, heart so bad your signature collection! Do you send them your book or meet them at conferences to have them signed? Being international irritates me in the long run. >.>

And to answer your question: Never! I adore them all and their ‘special’ aspects are pretty much unique to me – for both series, single titles, etc.

*Stares in awe at the Jeaniene Frost cover flats, Nalini Singh and Gena Showalter books.* Signature collection envy. Perfect. 😉

  2. I don’t think I can ever have enough favorites! It doesn’t seem logical to try and narrow down the books you loved, you loved them for a reason and that’s that 🙂 My list is ever-growing, I don’t think it makes them less special, it just means there’s more quality material out there which is a good thing.

  3. Kayleigh – I met Cassandra Clare, but all the other are done by mail. Not many authors visit Canada :/ I LOVE my collection — I’m expecting two more soon too 🙂

Jenny – Very well put. There’s just more quality material out there! I love it. 🙂

  4. I was going to say yes there is! But then realised that was hypocritical so my answer is no.
But I have come to realise that by book #20 or #21 some series’ aren’t as great as it once was. So there’s a problem is it still a great series if you only love upto say book #10 or book #15?

What makes a great book for me is one you remember in two or plus years time after you’ve read it and it stays with you and you still want to read it 6 months after you first read it!

    Have a lovely day! 🙂

  5. I agree with Jenny. Favorites are favorites because they stood out for one reason or another. And no, you can never have too many favorites. That’s like saying you can have too many books.

By the way…I heart your book closet!

  6. Ally – I agree with you that if the books in a series start sucking after a while, I won’t place them on my list. But if they get a minimum 4 star rating, they are joining the others. 🙂

Jen – OMG! Are there people out there who think there is such a thing as too many books?! *gasp* (Don’t ask that question to my husband ;))

  7. I have a lot of 4 star books on my favorites list *shrugs* I’ve recently been building my favorites page too. And no, you can’t have too many favs. 🙂

  8. I think your “favorites” list looks tame 😀

“Favs” are what makes us enthusiasts, there can never be too many.

  9. FV – So I’m not the only one with 4 star books on my list. Good. 🙂

Jessica – I like how you said ‘Favs are what makes us enthusiasts’. Agreed. 🙂
