BBAW – First Treasure

The festivities have begun.  It’s Book Bloggers Appreciation Week!

Each day, the powers that be over at BBAW headquarters will have a topic that we are invited to write about on our blog.  These topics are referred to as ‘treasures’.  Cute, eh?  It’s all in an effort for everyone to get to know one another a little better.  Now I’m not sure if I’ll be able to post about the chosen topic every afternoon this week, but I’m going to give it a try. 🙂

Today, we newer bloggers are asked to talk about the first book blog we ever discovered, why we love it and why we keep going back for more.

Smexy Books - How She Looked When I First Met Her

I really can’t remember exactly HOW I came across my first book blog, but I was most likely Google-ing about a book I was interested in buying.  I just remember suddenly noticing that I was visiting a blog called “Smexy Books”, then blushing a little at the name and the picture of the shirtless yummy man in roughed up jeans.  (I was still in slight denial that I was reading books that belonged on a site with the word “Smexy” in the title.)  The layout was wonderful – easy to navigate and easy to read.  That alone gave this blog some huge points.  Then I read a couple of the reviews and I really liked how they were written.   They were honest without being demeaning.  Then I read a few of the books that Smexy recommended and noticed that 4 out of 5 times, I would have rated them the same way Smexy did.  That became another reason I visited this blog daily – we seemed to have similar tastes in books.  So, after stalking this blog for a few weeks, I decided to really ‘explore’ it.  I was curious to know who was responsible for this really fun and inviting blog.  (Isn’t it terrible that it took me that long to even want to check?  Awful, awful Julie…*hangs head*) The one responsible for all this blog goodness was a girl named Mandi, and soon this Mandi and I spent many hours together her without her even knowing it.  (Okay, that sounds a little creepy if I put it like that…)

Smexy Books' New and Beautiful Look

I am a big believer in giving praise where praise is due.   So one day, a few months later, I emailed Mandi to tell her how much I enjoyed her blog.  I didn’t give any info about myself.  I don’t even think I used my real name!  (Yup, I was that shy and that much of a loser)  She emailed me back and was genuinely touched by my compliment.  For some reason, that sealed the deal for me.  Mandi was nice too!  I eventually left a couple anonymous comments on her blog (still shy) until finally, I sucked it up and left a comment – under a nickname.  Why I was so shy about letting people know I existed is beyond me…  But eventually, the nickname phased out and ‘Julie’ phased in.

I got gutsier and messaged Mandi via Goodreads.  We had a few little conversations that way.  And when Jason started suggesting that I start my own blog, and when I stopped ignoring his suggestion and started seriously considering it, I asked Mandi for a little advice.  Now, whether she likes it or not, she is my mentor.  She is also someone I’ve come to consider a friend – also whether she likes it or not 😉

Mandi’s blog is all about books.  No whining or venting posts about nothing.  It’s just about reading – the thing we all love to do in our ‘spare time’.  It really helps bring us ‘smut readers’ closer together.  Recently, she’s added a “Top Ten” list on Friday afternoons and I’ve really come to enjoy those.  In that post, you get a good glimpse at Mandi the cute and funny girl and not only the book reviewer.  I am truly happy to have ‘met’ her.  And lately, I’m starting to chat to her partner in crime Tori on Twitter.  She’s a great addition to the Smexy ‘brand’ while also providing honest and entertaining reviews.

I know we are only supposed to mention the first book blog, but I also want to take a moment to mention the second one I found.  Through Smexy Books, I found “Fiction Vixen”.  Now there’s another truly nice person and another very welcoming soul.  Her reviews and posts are often funny!  I check her blog twice a day too to make sure I don’t miss anything.  She rocks…and everyone should tell her so!

So a big THANK YOU to Mandi and to Sophia for showing me the joys of what is called a “book blog”.  I will forever be grateful for it…and Jason will forever be shuddering as he enters the bookstore to purchase yet another one of your book recommendations featuring some hot and yummy shirtless dude on the cover. 🙂

  1. Gasp – you stalked me all that time? LOLOL. I am so touched by your kind words Julie!! And I have to say – when we started talking through Goodreads I knew right from the start you were someone special. I had/have wonderful people who helped me get Smexy started so helping others is the least I can do..plus it is so much fun to chat with you!! Your blog is awesome and so much fun to visit every day. Thank you so much for this post!!

  2. Funny, I think Mandi’s was the first blog I stumbled across, too, quite accidentally. Until I found SmexyBooks, I hadn’t a clue that there was even a world of book bloggers out there, not to mention other things like Goodreads or Twitter! I was *gasp* keeping track of my series and such using an Excel file (dork!). And now, 6 months later, I’m not sure what I would do without my book-blogger/Twitter friends!

  3. Aww Julie you are a sweetheart and I agree with everything you said about Mandi. I lurve her too!!

  4. Smexy books is one of the blogs I discovered via the voting for the BBAW awards. I have to say it’s not my normal blog reading (I review kids’ books!) but I was struck by the quality of her blogging.

  5. I love reading these gals’ blogs too. But just how in the heck did I not know about your blog?!! I found you via Fiction Vixen and boy, have I been missing out!

  6. Book Vixen – I’m still quite new… Thank you for the compliment. Your blogs not so bad itself! Can’t wait for you to come back online ‘full time’ again, although I have been enjoying your blogger friends’ posts 🙂

  7. I agree Smexy and FV rock the blogs and you don’t do so bad yourself, Julie! 😉

  8. My first blog was also Mandy’s, and since then I read it everyday. I follow her also in Twitter and I had read almost all the books she had recommended and I am with you, her taste in books and mine is very similar; I love all the books she had suggest.
After reading her blog I start following other blogs she also recommended and now I am not just a bookaholic I am also a blog addict 🙂

  9. Great Post!!!!!!! I loooooove Mandi {& Tori!} – Smexybooks is the very first book blog I ever started following because it gave me a place to read and discuss Paranormal Romance.
I think I found Fiction Vixen somehow by following Smexy and was hooked when she did this hilarious fan fiction picture skit with Zhadist from BDB. Thanks for sharing, everyone!

  10. Spaz – I was following Fiction Vixen before, but what cemented it for me was also the Zhadist skit. I STILL laugh out loud every single time I see it! “well…he’s kind of a pansy ass but shit, he sparkles in the sun!!” LOVE!!!
