Yummy Man – Brock
Kick Ass Chick – Jenna Darrow
“In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand–and control–a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.
As she recovers under Brock’s care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order’s mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself–until a secret from Brock’s past and Jenna’s own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.”
Taken by Midnight by Lara Adrian is the 8th book in her Midnight Breed series. Yes, this is a series about vampires, but it’s very unique. The vampires (or Breed as they prefer to be called) that exist in these books are descendants of an alien race that landed on Earth many many years ago. Okay, it may sound strange, but believe me when I say it’s pretty cool.
There is ongoing story line about a Breed male named Dragos and his intent on being the most powerful of all the vampires. He wants to breed his own strong vampires and kill all of the existing strong vampires. This story line is the glue that sticks all of these books together. It’s very interesting to see how the Order (the Breed’s warriors) follows clues to Dragos’ whereabouts and figure out his plans and how in each book, a little bit of Draogs’ operation is taken down, with the ultimate goal of taking Dragos too.
Even though each book focuses on the one plot line, there is always a second, slightly happier plot line. A romantic one, where two people meet and fall in love. *Aww…* This time around we see how Brock falls in love with Jenna. Brock is a warrior with the Order. He’s the strong and silent one. We really don’t learn too much about him in previous books. We only know that his special gift (the gift that is passed on from mother to Breed male) is that he can take away a person’s pain by touching them. We also know that he feels very protective of Jenna after the ordeal she suffered in “Shades of Midnight”, the last installment. Actually, even after this book, we don’t know too much about him. We know he is strong of character and very loyal. And he’s been staying away from love – actually, he says he’s “allergic” to relationships — but he just can’t stay away from Jenna. The real clincher here is that Jenna is Human!
Jenna went through hell in the previous book. She’s left vulnerable, alone and scared. But she’s strong. She won’t let all this beat her. Her ordeal also left her with a little added “bonus”. I won’t get into it as not to spoil things, but I’m just gonna say Ew! She has a lot of changes to deal with and Brock is really helping her along. He’s a relative stranger but he becomes her rock.
The love story wasn’t really passionate and all animal this time around. I found it was just sweet. Two very lonely people who carry a very heavy ‘blame burden’ who find each other and make each other happy. I really liked the twist where Jenna is a human instead of a Breedmate. A Breedmate is a woman who is born with the special gene that enables her to mate and bond with a Breed vampire. You can tell who is a Breedmate by the little birthmark she possesses. In the previous books, either these women knew what they were or they didn’t and they were thrust into the Breed’s world (pardon the pun…tee hee) Once mated, Breedmates can live indefinitely alongside their other halves. But Jenna being human…how would that all pan out? I mean, Brock and Jenna need a HEA since this is a romance novel. How would Lara pull this off? I like how it all worked out. And I actually like that we don’t have all the answers as far as Jenna is concerned. I really hope we are not left hanging and that we find out more about her in the next books.
Book 9 will be titled “Deeper than Midnight” and it will be Hunter’s book. I can’t wait for this one. A Breed male born and bred to be an assassin now fighting on the ‘right’ side, never knowing affection or love. It has all the makings of a really sweet and tender love story. It’s due to hit stores June 28th 2011. (I know, June…*sigh*) I found “Taken by Midnight” to be a good continuation to the overall Midnight Breed story. I especially liked how the women were given a bigger story line this time around, because those Breedmates are more than just play things. They are strong and smart women that take care of business as much as their male counterparts.
Swoon worthy quote
“She waited, in terror and in hope, bewildered by the need she had to feel Brock’s mouth on hers.”
Giggle worthy quotes
“Jenna shook her head, astonished. Also wryly amused. ‘You know, I’m starting to think it might be kind of fun being a cyborg.’”
