My Life’s Quirks – Things I Never Thought I Would Hear Myself Say To Kids

When you have a baby, you expect a certain amount of change in your life.  You know that you will have to feed the baby, burp the baby and change the baby.  When the baby grows into a toddler, you expect that you will have to feed the toddler and change the toddler.  What you don’t realize is that you will be doing some things that, up until you had the baby or toddler, you would have thought ridiculous.  Examples may include clapping and cheering as though the Ottawa Senators annihilated the Toronto Maple Leafs when your toddler does a pee on the potty, or going to the toy store to find a pink (not peach, not brown, not gray, but pink) Zhu Zhu Pet.

You will also find yourself saying things that, until you had the baby or toddler, you would have thought absurd.  Like “Yummy, yummy.  Do you want more delicious pureed broccoli?” or “Please do.  I would love to hear you sing “twinkle twinkle little star” again.”

But, even after being around toddlers for the past 4 years, there are things that come out of my mouth that even I do a double take to.  That I hear myself say and think “Did I really just say that out loud?”  Such things would include:

“We don’t stick our faces in the toilet”

“We don’t stick our faces in the garbage can”

“We don’t put our sippy cups down our pants”

“We don’t put crackers down our pants”

“We don’t sit on our friends”

“We don’t tickle there”

“We don’t put Cheerios in your shoes”

“We don’t put Cheerios in my shoes”

“We don’t lick the TV”

“We don’t lick the windows”

“We don’t lick our friends”

I marvel at what goes through their little minds.  They are much cleverer than we realize so I know there is a reason they do what they do, but it’s still my job as a parent and as a daycare provider to show them the way to being an acceptable part of society (hence the many “don’ts”).  Because goodness knows no one will hire someone if the first thing they do is lick the office building’s windows…

Things I never thought I would hear myself say to kids.  Just another one of my life’s quirks.

  1. Haha, that is very true! I guess the thought never really crossed my mind but I’ve been around plenty of people with kids to hear some of the funny things that go on. It keeps life interesting and entertaining though right?! 🙂

  2. I’ve worked at a daycare too for quite some years and wait untill they go pre-teen. Then they start to challenge you in other ways and you’ve got to provide reasons why you want something from them. And oh joys, that’s when the debate starts 😉

Toddler are so very inquisitve of mind, want to learn much more via taste, touch etc cetera 😀 I loved them at that age…but I may look through pink glasses ATM since I’m not working at a daycare for 5 years now LOL

  3. Deanna – Definitely keeps life entertaining!

    Leontine – Pre-teen… *shudders*

  4. Lovely post as usual. I love the don’t lick the TV!

  5. don’t lick the tv..nice 😉

  6. Kids say the darndest things, eh. My personal favorite is ‘We don’t lick our friends’. Haha!

  7. Ally and Mandi – Yeah…I really couldn’t believe I was uttering the words “We don’t lick the TV”. Most things that they do don’t completely stun me, but that one did. 🙂

Jen – The toddlers are a little young yet. Eventually, you could add “yet” to that one. 😉

  8. These two were my favorites:
“We don’t put Cheerios in your shoes”
“We don’t put Cheerios in my shoes”

    Gotta love kids.

  9. Colette – Cheerios are the bane of my existence. I find them EVERYWHERE! lol

  10. Oh my goodness I’m laughing so hard right now I’m crying. You are too funny and it’s all so very true. I’ve often said that if ever there was a camera taping me during the day they would see and hear some pretty interesting things. LOL

  11. Angela – I’ve said that too, that sometimes it might be cool to have a video camera taping all the time to capture the funny and cute moments. Then I realize that it would also capture the times that I’m losing my mind! lol

  12. Such a funny post! Seems like your kids lick EVERYTHING. LOL
