Question – Are You Cooler Online?

In the year 2011, we all suffer from multiple personality disorders.  Each and every one of us – mostly.  Now don’t go and get all insulted on me now.  Let me explain.  We all have at least two distinct personalities:  our Real Life personality (or RL) and our Online personality.  Now some of you may have more than just the two, but these are the two that are the most common.

Now in RL, some of us are deathly shy, or always crotchety, or living with our parents at the age of 47.  But online, none of that matters.  You can befriend anyone you want and not think twice.  You can be a bitch and everyone will think you’re funny.  And you can decide not tell anyone that you are living with your parents at the age of 47.  Hell, you can tell people you are 27 and live in a mansion in the middle of Montreal!  The point is, you can be whoever you want to be online and none would be the wiser.  Basically, you can be a lot cooler online.

How about me?  Well, it’s pretty much what you see if what you get.  I really do run a daycare in my home.  I really do have two kids and a husband.  I really do live in Canada (if I didn’t, why then would I have a maple leaf tattooed on my lower back?).  I’m a little shy (still) in person.  It’s strange but I can stand up in front of a crowd and give a seminar like it’s no biggie, but one on one or in a small group of people, I take a few minutes to warm up.  I’m the same online.  I don’t want to intrude.  I don’t want to step on toes.  I want everyone to feel comfortable with me and I want everyone to feel as though they can talk to me about anything.  I have a sarcastic wit.  I don’t like practical jokes or tacky jokes.  I like to laugh with people and not at people.  Mostly, I like to make people laugh and feel good about themselves.  My family is my number one priority.  My me time is very precious to me (basically my books and my blog) because I went so long without.  I have the best parents on the planet and feel blessed each and every day for having them in my life.  They are among my best friends.  I adore my kids.  They are smarter than me and I don’t mind.  They are my joy.  My husband buys me books.  Need I say more?  How I write my articles is how I speak in RL.  I do speak French but I don’t have an accent.  I love where I live and would never consider moving anywhere else.  Ever.  I prefer having a small close circle of friends to having hundreds and hundreds of friends.  I am a happy person.  Chances are, even if at this very moment I am elbow deep in something nasty the toddlers left me, I am happy.

So that is me.  How about you?  Are you cooler online?

I don’t listen to Country Music very often so I was unaware of this song’s existence.  I found it when I was searching for images to go with this post.  It’s a really cute song with a fun video….so I thought I would share it with you.  🙂

  1. I’m so cool both online and offline that you will be blinded by my sparkling wit and beauty.

  2. HHmmm, I don’t think I’m any different online then IRL but I know I have a weird sense of humor which can be hard to get IRL and even harder online 😉

  3. Katie – You are completely right of course. But don’t forget blinded by your charm and smarts! 😉

Leontine – It’s true! When you have a dry humor, people aren’t quite sure how to take you since they can’t see your facial expressions. 🙂

  4. This is brilliant. Great post! My husband gets home from work each evening and asks me “So how was your virtual life today?”….it does get sort of weird, doesn’t it?

  5. I’m just the same online as I’m in real life. The only difference is that in real life I love sarcasm and black humour but I try to tone it down online.

  6. This is hilarious…and so so true. I’m pretty much the same loudmouth online as I am in RL. I’ve got the gift of gab… seriously I never shut up. 😀

  7. In RL I am very sarcastic, and I let bf do the talking cos boring conversations bore me 😉

  8. My online self and my real life self are one and the same. I type exactly like I speak and I don’t hesitate to call myself out on my own buffoonery. As the youth of today like to say…I keeps it real. 😉

P.S. Thanks for throwing up a Brad Paisley video. I heart him!

  9. Penelope – “So how was your virtual life today?” I love that!

Sabrina – It’s too bad that black humour can be taken out of context online because done right, it’s really funny! 🙂

Jess – So thank goodness for Twitter for you. 😉

    blodeuedd – Sarcastic is fun!

Jen – *hides face* That’s the first Brad Paisley song I hear. I don’t dislike country music, I just don’t go and search it out. He has a good sound though.

  10. I role play a woman in the MMORPG that I play… So er.. I wonder what that means??? *deep thoughts*

  11. LOVE IT!!! I am wayyyyyy cooler online. way way cooler. I am very shy around new people, especially in groups. I have a hard time coming up with conversation. But I am very animated and loud when I get past all that!

  12. Stanley – You are definitely cooler online, with all your suitors and all. 😉

Pamela – Now that I would have never guessed. I assumed you were out there and out-going in RL.

  13. I like to talk…to people I know. I can strike up a conversation with most people, but I don’t often do so. Online, well I talk to everyone. Everyday I say I hate people, then I hop online and love the people I chat with or blog stalk. Maybe I’m just unstable. lol Wait…I’m not really crazy…too much.

  14. LOL, I love this post! Especially since the first thing I thought of WAS the Brad Paisley song and then BAM you posted it! My RL self is the same as my OL self…the only thing that makes my OL self cooler than my RL self is the fact that I actually have a social life. Haha, I have wonderful friends but with my crazy schedule I don’t get to hang out with them much unless it’s a break of some sort. So there is my honest short answer! I loved your answer for this Julie. 😀

  15. scooper – “Everyday I say I hate people, then I hop online and love the people I chat with or blog stalk.” LOL! 🙂

    Deanna – What’s a social life?! *blink blink* 😉

  16. I would have to say that yes, I’m much cooler–and braver–online. I probably wouldnt say half the things I say on my blog in RL. That’d be like a no-no or something. LOL.

  17. Evolet – Braver makes sense. It’s easier to say and do things when someone is not looking directly at you! 🙂

  18. LMAO Julie! Exactly…I don’t even know what a social life is, can someone please explain? 😛

  19. Great post. I have to say that the book blogger me is what you get. I am more fun online, I think – in that I don’t get out much IRL, so I can have fun chatting with the girls on Twitter.

  20. I’m far more outgoing online. In person I’m painfully shy and happy to fade into the background. Online I’m inappropriate, sometimes crude, and I like dirty immature humor. *shrugs* (I like those things IRL too but I’m must quieter about it) 🙂

  21. twimom – I don’t get out much either! Twitter and Blogging is the most socializing I get! lol

Sophia – You enjoy dirty immature humor?! Hmm…never noticed. 😉

  22. I’m way cooler online. I’m very shy IRL.
