Guest Post – Why I Read Paranormal Romance

Ally, who writes the blog Swept Away Again, reads a lot.  I mean a lot!  Ally’s favorite type of book to read is Paranormal Romance.  (If there is any question, just look at her read pile.)  I invited Ally to come visit this week for Paranormal Romance Week to tell us why she reads PNR.

I started reading Paranormal Romance by accident, I was shopping in my local supermarket in the magazine section and saw some cheap books on offer for £1.99 and thought I’d give them ago and ended up falling in love with both books and getting glued to two amazing series and two brilliant authors, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan. I adored Dark Prince and Night Embrace, and still have them now although they’re a little tatted looking and thoroughly read books they still have a spot on my bookshelf’s. These two books lead me to a brand new world of authors and storylines where I could happily escape for any length of time and be totally absorbed into a new world that was different to the here and now and I could lose myself in the storyline and forget about what was happening in the real world.

‘Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere’. – Albert Einstein

I first started out reading contemporary romance and although I enjoyed it I always felt there was something missing and at the end of nearly every book I felt a little let down and could never really pin point why until I started reading paranormal romance. I love the way the author’s of paranormal romance let their imagination totally free, which in turn let the reader’s imagination roam from whatever is happening in their life and in the real world. At the time I really needed the escapism (I still do today, but for different reasons) and now nearly three years later I can still recall some of those books and moments they helped me deal with and escape from and happily I have never looked back on reading paranormal romance.

‘You can’t depend on your eyes when you imagination is out of focus’. – Mark Twain

Paranormal romance is so different because it can include so many different ideas for storylines from toying with people from Atlantis to Merlin, the Fae, werewolves and vampires, Greek gods, demons and other mythical creatures. Each and every paranormal romance novel is fresh, new and different. It’s not very often I read a book and think ‘well that’s just like so and so’s but worse/better’ because author’s really are an imaginative bunch who come up with some really great storylines and ideas. Some of my favourite ones have to include Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series, Kresley Coles Immortals After Dark, Christine Feehan’s Leopard People, Lora Leigh’s Breeds, Sherrilyn Kenyon’s The League oh and a million more I could list but won’t!

‘I doubt that the imagination can be suppressed.  If you truly eradicated it in a child, he would grow up to be an eggplant.’ – Ursula K. LeGuin

Paranormal romance takes you to a whole different world, one that’s safe and free and doesn’t often make you think about what’s going on in the real world. Because often paranormal romance takes you to a whole brand new world that can only live in your imagination. I have often half read a book and spent hour’s day dreaming how it would turn out until I could get my greedy little hands back on the book and figure out if I was right or wrong. And It’s not very often you’ll put down a paranormal romance and then go looking at people to see if their fae, vampire, shifter or another mythical creature, although I’m telling you that baby really looked like it had fangs! This is why I read and love paranormal romance and think you should too!
