Kick Ass Chick – Secret McQueen

From Goodreads
For Secret McQueen, her life feels like the punch line for a terrible joke. Abandoned at birth by her werewolf mother, hired as a teen by the vampire council of New York City to kill rogues, Secret is a part of both worlds, but belongs to neither. At twenty-two, she has carved out as close to a normal life as a bounty hunter can.

When an enemy from her past returns with her death on his mind, she is forced to call on every ounce of her mixed heritage to save herself—and everyone else in the city she calls home. As if the fate of the world wasn’t enough to deal with, there’s Lucas Rain, King of the East Coast werewolves, who seems to believe he and Secret are fated to be together. Too bad Secret also feels a connection with Desmond, Lucas’s second-in-command…

When you reach ‘the end’ of a book, many things can happen.  You could cry.  You could smile.  You could throw the book across the room.  You could curse the author then throw the book across the room.  When I reached the end of Something Secret This Way Comes by Sierra Dean, there is just one reaction that fit.  My jaw hit the floor.  Hard.

I had such fun reading this book!  Something Secret This Way Comes is a very fast-paced book with a real kick ass chick as a heroine.  But she didn’t feel like too much.  And her name!  Secret.  That’s her name.  Isn’t it awesome?!  Secret is half vampire and half werewolf.  She uses her vampire control to keep from shifting and that way, so no one knows her true nature.  (Well, technically four people know).  The vampires think her other half is human and so do the weres.  The weres just say she smells like death, but Secret says that she stinks that way because of her job.  You see, she’s a bounty hunter that works primarily for the vampire Counsel.

Secret’s back story is great.  And her feelings for those who know her secret (her grandmere, Holden, Keaty) are really well written.  You can tell how much she cares for these people and how loyal she it to them.

I guess that is why I was surprised by how the emotion came across as almost hallow when it came to Secret and her mate-bonding.  She isn’t big on relationships and is usually quite in control, then suddenly she discovers that she is ‘bonded’ and there you go.  She doesn’t want it but all too quickly accepts it.  I just found that whole part of the book to be a little off and that Secret’s reaction to the whole situation to be inconsistent with her character.  But not so much so that it turned me off of that part of the story, because the chemistry between her and the men in this book was brilliant!  The chemistry between Secret and Lucas…  Holy wow!  And the chemistry between Secret and Desmond… Well, I didn’t find it to jump off the page quite as much, but it was still very strong and very well written.  There was even a little bit of something subtle between Secret and Holden!  Lots of sparks flying and all of them exciting.  I’m very curious to see where all these sparks will land.

Even though the ideas weren’t completely new, the story and Secret herself made this a really entertaining read.  I am very much looking forward to the next book, A Bloody Good Secret, which is due out September 20th 2011.  After the way this book ended, I can’t wait to dive into that one!

Giggle worthy quote

“’Now you listen to me you pretty boy mosquito, because I am only going to say this once.  I don’t care how old or powerful you are.  If anything, anything happens to this girl right here, I will find a way to rip your pulseless heart right out of your chest.  Comprende?

Without missing a beat he coolly replied, ‘Detective Castilla, your Secret is safe with me.’

She blinked with surprise, and I groaned.  ‘God Holden.  How long have you been waiting to use that line?’

‘About three years.’”

Kick Ass Chick – Secret McQueen

From Goodreads
They say it’s impossible to find a man in New York City. Secret McQueen needs to find two in one night. Of course, it’ll mean pulling off the impossible—find and kill a displaced rogue vampire without disrupting the first promising date she’s had in ages. As a werewolf hybrid used to walking a fine line of survival in the vampire world, though, Secret eats impossible for breakfast.

Somewhere between hello and the first round of drinks, Secret makes her move. Her target, Hollywood’s biggest star, shouldn’t be hard to spot. Just look for swarms of fans. Except every time her vampire liaison, Holden, helps keep her mission on track, her date runs further off the rails.

Either Holden has a hidden agenda, or he knows more than he’s letting on about her quarry. One way or another, Secret is determined to get her man, and meet Mr. Right. Or die trying.

I really enjoyed reading The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters.  I actually read it before Something Secret This Way Comes, but I don’t think it matters which way you go.  Sierra does an excellent job introducing us to Secret and giving us a bit of her background without it feeling like she is giving us a huge back story.  And that is important in a novella because you don’t want to be spending half the book learning about a character you may have already read anyways.  Holden is in this story too and I like how he is in this book.   I think it feeds well from and may explain some questions that arise in book one.  Maybe.  We’re not sure yet because these questions are still unanswered.

The main ‘incident’ in this book is referred to a few times in book one and knowing the full story made me smile when I came across it.  It was very smart to turn that story into this novella.

I don’t feel like there is a better way to go about reading this.  Either read it before you dive into Something Secret… or after.  Either way, you should read it.  It’s a fast paced story that reads very well.  And what I mean by that is it doesn’t feel like it has any missing pieces.  A perfect companion to Something Secret This Way Comes.
